Binay You know how sometimes, you walk into a room and automatically click with someone? Well that happened to me on my first day at Surattum Primary School. He was good looking with a very cheeky smile and sparkly eyes. And 10 years old! This kid stood out above the rest as soon as I started teaching. His English isn’t good, but he caught on to what I was saying so quickly and proceeded to help the rest of the kids. (sometimes by doing their work for them or calling out the answers all the time)! He was also second guessing what I was going to do next and was often right. Taught multiplication - got it, taught division - got it, given words to learn - done it. That night over dinner I mentioned to ... read more

Greeting to you all, I'm afraid its my turn to enter a blog. I don't write such interesting articles as Becks, but bare with me! Darjeeling, what can I say, well anything was better after leaving Varanasi. It was a long train journey to Darjeeling, via Patna( Lonely Planet describes it as rough and lawless),the coolest station so far in India, with a wicked food plaza( Becks ate loads, but I ate nothing as I was feeling tender after my vomiting in the morning!) Then another train to Siliguri, and then we got on the old vintage Toy train to Darjeeling. 7 hours going at 15kms an hour ,gradually ascending to 2000 m at Darjeeling. We went first class( only 4 carriages to the whole train), First class is not first class! But very quaint and ... read more

It’s often interesting to hear about the costs of things in other countries so here are few things for you. Remember that there are about 30-32 rupees to the dollar. 1 hour on the internet - 30rp. 1 small kit-kat - 5rp. A cup of street chai - 7rp. A good cup of REAL coffee - 25rp. 375mls of local whisky (tastes O.K.) - 92rp. 500grms of those delicious little sweet cakes - 85rp. A Thai feast for 5 in a little restaurant (my birthday) - about 1000rp. Naturally everything seems incredibly inexpensive, but then the average person here would earn so little that these things would be luxuries. An interesting hairdressing experience. I decided that my hair colour needed doing and after having hunted high and low (in Darjeeling take that expression literally) I went ... read more

Holi is a Hindu religious festival along the lines of Easter, celebrating spring, new life etc. It seems mainly to be a great excuse to cover people with coloured power. It does wash off!... read more

6th March This week I started working at what will be my school for the next 10 weeks. The walk there was amazing and I was worried that I would ever be able to find my way back, although in Darjeeling, I have worked out that if I get lost, I go up and eventually will find somewhere I know! And of course in the back of my mind was, that if going to school we walked steeply down, then coming back from school, I must have to walk steeply up. Ugh! Never was a truer word spoken. I will end up with legs like an Amazon and lungs like Joan Sutherland. I may not look sexy, but by God I’ll be fit. Wow betide any man who gets betwixt my thighs when I return!!!! The ... read more

25th February Well here I am at last. Darjeeling, my home for the next 10 weeks or so. The drive from Bagdogra was scary and amazing all at the same time. I couldn’t begin to describe the roads. Hair raising would be an understatement but my driver was wonderful, more of a tour guide and did an incredible job. We stopped for tea and momo’s (yummy) and he paid. Yes, of course he was hoping for a tip, but when I gave it to him he stayed back and seemed embarrassed to take it. He told me that his elder brother works in Nepal for a bank and that he would contact him so that I could stay with him and his wife and children when I visit there in May. People here are just wonderful. ... read more

As many know, Hel and I get over excited by walking/trekking/rambling for lots of reasons, but here would be five: 1. Simplicity of getting from a to b with only needing to make sure you are warm, dry and fed 2. Time to chat, or not 3. Space/vistas 4. People 5. Physicality However, that's a bit boring and not what this is about. We've just come back from an exhilerating 5 day yomp in the Singallia National Park, going as far north as foreigners are allowed in this part of the Himalayas, to boarder points of India, Nepal and Sikkim. I'll let Hel describe the enchanting tea houses, tough climbs above the clouds and stunning sunrises and sets over Everest to the East and the Kangchendzonga (world's third highest peak and banned to people) Range directly ... read more
