A group of us had planned to trek up to Mussoorie for over a week. I have to say that I had a great time even though my lungs were trying to jump out of my chest and head home. Yes, I wasn’t physically ready for this trek, but that’s ok neither was anyone else. We met up at around 6:30am and started our adventure through/over the mountain to Mussoorie. It took us about 4 hours to get there. I’m not exactly sure how many miles/kilometers we walked but my best guess would be somewhere close to 20 kilometers, but sometimes it felt like 200 kilometers. There were parts that were so steep you could only walk a short distance before you just had to stop and catch your breath. It was actually funny, in a ... read more

Mussoorie…Queen of the Hills Mussoorie is a nice hill station located above the Doon Valley. The air is cooler here and of course damper. Everything is damp…a situation I most dislike about India…the humidity and the musty, mold and black filth it creates. It cannot be healthy…I know for a fact, I have been battling dark circles under my eyes and this is most likely due to the mold spores in the air. Again there is no use of bleach nor heaters to dry places out so mold grows and grows…it seeps into everything. Mussoorie offers incredible vistas of the valley. It was a British get away during the British occupation here so there are still remnants of this in terms of International Schools, Language Schools, Christian Churches and British “palaces.” There is even a bust ... read more

After our week of yoga and meditation in Rishikesh we set off to Mussoorie. Mussoorie is an old hill station set 2000 metes above sea level in the Himalayas. We choses to come here because my Grandad who was Anglo-Indian went to school here from 1933-1939. He had often talked about his school and how beautiful it was and it was this that inspired our trip to India. When we arrived at St.Georges College we were struck by the amazing setting. You can see for miles, there are even snow capped mountains in the distance. It was such a peaceful and serene place. We did arrive on the first day of the school holidays and one of the teachers we spoke to assured us with 600 boys around the place it was not usually so quiet. ... read more

We finally managed to shake off the hippie torpor that had overtaken us in Rishikesh and escape 'happy valley'. We decided to travel to Mussorrie, a hill station founded by a Captain Young in the 1840's. Mussorie is wonderful. The town is located at an altitude of 6000ft in the Himalayas. It has an alpine climate at this time of year, with warm clear sunny days and cool evenings. We have been spending our time walking in the stuning countryside and taking in the views, including the distant snowy peaks of the high himalayas in the distance. We hiked to the place where George Everest lived when he was surveyor general of India. We also visited the Surkhanda Devi temple, which is at the top of a mountain at an altitude of about 10,000 feet. To ... read more

After Leh I decided it was time for another horribly long bus ride in uncomfortable seats... I decided to opt for the middle seat completely at the back... Or in fact the man at the ticket counter must have read my mind and gave me this most auspicious seat... Ah, how I love to be bounced around with nothing to hold on to... The bus ride in question was from Leh to Srinigar with a five hour stop over in Kargil... I was in luck and had two lovely Korean girls to keep me company in the back... The scenery was spectacular as usual... We left Buddhist country just before Kargil, from there on it is Muslim and minarets dominate the towns... The trip from Kargil to Srinigar was done during the night on quite a ... read more

So, given the cost of labor here in India, it is easier and makes more sense in terms of time to hand your clothes off to get washed instead of doing it yourself and waiting in our breezy, damp rooms for them to dry. So, for about 10 rupees (less then $.25 a garment), we've been sending things out to the dhobi (washer-person).So, given the cost of labor here in India, it is easier and makes more sense in terms of time to hand your clothes off to get washed instead of doing it yourself and waiting in our breezy, damp rooms for them to dry. We have one more week in Mousourrie--A big Hindi exam the day before we leave and a paper due this upcoming Monday. Though the work load is much smaller and amount of free time is much greater than what I am used to--it has been difficult to find a space in which I can be completely alone. I really am completely enjoying myself and the moment--thinking often of how it is to be here, rather than how I am going to feel going home---but what must be the absolute most frustrating part is my forced dependence on others. Due to our surroundings, which will only intensify as we leave the very missionary based, British style Mousourrie, I must constantly be with someone whenever going somewhere. I find myself walking 20 feet ahead or behind at times, ... read more

Just arrived home last night from an abosolutely amazing weekend. We left Moussorie around 7:00AM on Friday to take a 6 hour drive to the glacial source of the Yamuna, at Yamontri in the Himalayas. We had 2 stops on the way, once for tea about 2 hours away and again for lunch where we sat at the side of the road looking over the Yamuna running relatively flat. We arrived around 5:00, rested for a bit and went over what we have done so far on our independent fieldwork projects. My focus, originally, was on Special Economic Zones in the context of the nationalist and feminist movements...but since the lectures I heard in Delhi and the interviews I have had thus far in Moussorie (with professors, shop owners, and our wonderful neighbors) I think I ... read more
