Mukteshwar Diary : The weather was perfect , crisp and cold @ 6am when mani along with Roshan ji had come to pick me up. Overnight rains in delhi had ensured that the Fog gave way to a clear sky and the setting was perfect for a long drive.
Crossing Delhi was the most time consuming as there were numerous police pickets minus police walas and a surprise early morning traffic in the lutyens area , probably being a Friday more people were on their way out for weekend. We drove and the first break we took was at Bhajan’s highway Dhaba (most trusted eatery on that belt) Mixed Tandoori Paranthas were awesome though Tea was average.
There was chillness in the air and we were joking that this air is giving all signals that we will have it real Cold there in mukteshwar. Next stop was at Kath Godam to get the Diesel Topped up in the Car and from there we started for Mukteshwar.Mani who had been there earlier was commenting about his last journey experiences but both of us had our eyes on the changing Landscape which from Green was turning into light brown depicting the
harsh winters that area was going through.
It was around 2 pm that we entered Mukteshwar area , we had booked a cottage at Mountain Trail (Most Recommended) which is 4 kms before Main Mukteshwar. The weather suddenly took an abrupt turn, it turned cloudy and it started raining in spurts. We witness some snow on the way up but it was nothing to write home about.
After Lunch and little bit of rest we started for a evening trek and also to get our registrations done for Paragliding camp. We deliberately left the car midway as we wanted to walk and experience the pristine beauty of that area as close as possible. Trek though short was very steep and it took me atleast a good amount of determination to reach the dekko point also known as Jhalli….but what a view…we were like hanging up in the air. Nerve chilling winds were hitting us hard on the face and the beautiful trail of Himalayas was in its full Glory. Lofty snowy peaks right in front of you the scene was absolute mesmerizing.
It was about Sun set time and Mani suggested that we rush to the other
side of it to a place called Sunset point. We rushed and on the way watched a tempo being towed uphill by some locals, whose driver had lost control and the vehicle skirted into a Gorge, luckily got tangled into some trees and the boys got saved somehow.
Reached the sunset point, the view was pure magic Sun turned the sky from Blue to Gold to Orange and then dark. We clicked some breathtaking pictures both at Jhalli and at the sunset point.Missed the Herbal tea as the shack owner was hibernating. We decided to go back to our cottage as it was scotch o clock nearly. Drinking with Mani has always been a pleasure but with such serene and picturesque surroundings it was divine. After hard earned Scotch/Music and specially cooked dinner we decided to take a night walk. The three layers of clothing was not helping as the temperature had dropped down to 0 degrees. We decided to go to sleep hoping to see some snow atleast.
It was roughly at 5.30 in the morning I was shaken awake from my sleep as Mani who had set an alarm to catch the sunrise saw something happening
outside.
Quickly getting into the warmers we both went out and were welcomed by the most soft of the snowballs ever imagined. It was snowing all around. It was very silent only sound that we could hear was of our own footsteps in the piles of snow. It went on like this for next 5 hours which turned the mukteshwar into while. It had snowed more than 9 inches. To say it was awesome would be an understatement as the experience we had is the one that all those present there will savor for the rest of their lives.
The temperature was -4 c at night and in the morning it was -2. We clicked umpteen no of photographs and videos but the beauty of the snow fall is to be felt not recorded. No way that any camera can capture the actual ambience the show which mother nature had set for us.
Awesome Mukteshwar – will meet again soon !
