Good-Bye Middle East - Hello India! After 3 take-offs, 3 landings and 3 hours in the back of a taxi we arrived at our first Indian destination - Tiruvannamalai or Tiru for short. It’s located three-hours south-west from Chennai on the south-eastern side of India. If we turn back the clock six-years, that’s when my Mom and Dad told my brother and I that they were going to India. “What?” It wasn’t the first place we thought they would go for a “holiday.” As the departure date drew near, my Mom decided not to go - I think she finally realised where she was going and decided staying at home would have been better for her; but the curiosity for my Dad however was too strong and he went on his own, going to Tiru and ... read more

Today is December 26th and we have just spent the last two days enjoying Christmas in India. On or about December 23rd, the Christmas decorations began appearing in India storefronts, businesses and on Indian houses. There were stars a plenty, multicoloured streamers and even the occasional strand of Christmas lights. However, not a Christmas palm tree to be found! Christmas Eve was a full day for us. It began with a Christmas concert at Arunachala Village School. This was not what one might expect, Cheryl and Lucas sitting contentedly watching the children perform, rather it was Lucas and Cheryl and others from AHAM performing for the children. We had the shear pleasure of looking out into a sea of beautiful faces, while Vivian read a Christmas story in English as two of the teachers simultaneously translated ... read more

I wasn’t sure what to title this week’s blog. I considered “A Day in the Life in India”, or “Trials and Tribulations” and finally decided on “Going with the Flow”. India is a lesson in acceptance. Time does not exist in India in the same way that it exists in the west. The exercise of planning is at best an exercise in futility, at worst a total waste of time. As relatively short term visitors the lesson in acceptance is relatively easy, for those who choose to remain here it becomes their sadhana or spiritual practice. We experience this weekly when we have the cottage cleaned and the laundry done. The first laundry experience was perhaps our most interesting. We came home looking forward to the fresh smell of line drying laundry on our roof top ... read more

It came to me as I began to write this week’s blog that if I am going to provide a fair description of this amazing country and the experience of being here, I need to share in equal measure the good and the bad. Some of you may wonder why I am drawn to this country and this weeks blog will a look at the India that Lucas and I see. The India that is both on the surface and below the surface. The India that stays hidden from western eyes and the western mind. The India that you will see when you see it with your heart. It came to me as I walked around Mt. Arunachula that the India I see is an India seeped in love. The very act of circumambulation of Arunachula, ... read more

I have heard it said the Mother India assaults your senses. The sights, the smells, the filth, the poverty, all greet you when you arrive in this amazing country. Yet there is so much more. The warmth of the people, the colors, the energy and the vastness of the country itself. And so it was for us as we arrived after a busy week in Germany. We arrived at 1:45 am on November 26th to a beautiful bright new airport in Bangalore. No problem getting through the H1N1 screening. We walked through a heat sensor as we entered customs and immigration. I guess we are not as hot as we think we are, because no one noticed the fever of excitement we were experiencing as we returned to India. Customs and immigration was well organized and ... read more

Going deep into the space of Unknowing The Heart Cave is dark You cannot find your way with your eyes or your mind The only way you can know is to feel your way through It's within the darkness that we discover who we really are The Heart Cave holds the mystery of the Universe In the Heart Cave we are One Yet with the Open Heart It is still just the Beginning Mind quieting in its Searching Attention directed to the Source of all Being Spaciousness Revealing There is no Ending Going to India was about finding myself, or awakening my heart to the meaning of Love. These journeys have served as my foundation, and have enabled me to explore the meaning of my life on ever deepening levels. My first two trips in 2005 ... read more

We arrived into Trivandrum after a seven hour bus journey and checked into our hotel at 5pm on Sunday. We've decided to try to avoid travelling on Sundays if we can as the bus service seems to be reduced and much slower with lots of locals sightseeing too. As we travelled from the state of Tamil Nadu into Kerala we passed by banana plantations and wind farms. Trivandrum is the capital city of Kerala state and appears to be a wealthy place - large upmarket shops and fine public buildings. We popped into the public library for a nosy and it was well stocked, computerised and efficiently run. A million miles away from the dusty, under resourced library we saw in Delhi. We went to the Zoo here and whilst it wasn't great, there was a ... read more
