One key difference I've learned that needs to be taken into account when travelling India, is that it takes an awful lot longer to get anywhere than I'm used to. This does unfortunately have the consequence of limiting my range through the week, where working goes well into the evening, and everywhere closes by 11pm. Nonetheless, I did manage a couple of forays out into the wilderness of Tamil Nadu... away from the safety (and expense!) of the fortress. The nearby town of Mamallapuram (or Mahabalipuram as it was known when the British found it too difficult to pronounce), was an obvious first candidate - 20km down the road (or 30 mins). The town is famous for its multitude of temples carved out of single pieces of rock. Viewing did close at 6pm, but it was ... read more

we really enjoyed pondicherry. it's going to go down as one of my fave places definately. very indian, very tamil, but also, quite a lot french! our room had the best air con we have had so far... we had to wrap up in several blankets at night. it was fab, although it did make it even harder when we had to leave the hotel..... we visited Auroville. what / where is auroville you ask. well, please see auroville.org if you would like to hear about it without a massive dose of cynicism (as usual). this is what the website says.... "Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville ... read more

Beach! Hurrah for the beach!!! With a massive park full of natural, and man-made rock temples to play in we spent many hours exploring and marveling at the skill and patience of the sculptors and carvers who created this amazing spectacle. With a long beach and so many rocks/ caves around its a good place to escape the crazy temple towns of Tami for awhile. Granite carvings seem to be specialist work here with temple deity's been crafted here for export to new temples around the globe. Stone mason chisels and drills run from sunrise to sunset. Rising at sunset we watched the fisherman retrieve their nets before finding the 5 Rathas/ temples carved from a single boulder. A popular traveler hang out it has been a great place to stock up on suppliers and prepare ... read more

I wrote this a few days ago but haven't had a chance to put it up yet! So here it is.. It was whilst sitting on an early morning bus from Mamallapurnam to Chennai airport that I realized how much I love travelling India by train. The trains may be late. You may not always get a seat. You may be surrounded by cockroaches. BUT, you meet the Indian people. You know where you are when you arrive at your destination. You get the best chai and snack food. But most importantly, you can sit in a train doorway and watch the countryside whizz past… and there is very little that I have done so far that beats that experience. I’m sure you’re not supposed to sit with your legs sticking out the train doors. I’m ... read more

Wow, its bloody hot here! I am so pleased we decided to fight the angry mob and change our flights to Chennai, it is sooooooo good down here. MESSAGE FOR SAM - YES PLEASE CAN WE HAVE THOSE CONTACT NUMBERS? thank you xxxxx I can't use MSN as my password has a character we can't get up on the Indian keyboards! Yesterday we ventured into Chennai Central Zone and talk about overload of sensory perceptions! Smells, sounds, sights, a cacophony of everythingness all pushed into small spaces! There was so much happening that I can't remember anything apart from smiling and feeling happy. I am a bit fed up of Pervy men though. Jade went to change some money yesterday at a small (tiny!) bank and I was invited to sit down to wait, as soon ... read more

I moved on, rather reluctantly, from Puducherry to Mamalappuram. No-one seems to have bothered to abbreviate this name (possibly because it is itself a slightly shorter version of Mahabalipuram which is its other current name (Nothing to do with Mahabali or Bali, the demon king tricked by the dwarf, whose annual return to earth is celebrated every year in Kerala). The obvious abbreviation is Mama and then Auroville could relocate a few miles north and the Matrimandir could be in Mama. So much more sensible. Anyway. I am staying at a very nice hotel called Mamallaa Heritage, which is just a short walk from the beach (the Tamil fondness for long names would not have been satisfied with Mamalla Heritage). To get to the beach, though, you have to walk down a road which is lined ... read more

Woke up normal time, ate then threw up breakfast...not sure why I bothered. I took at bus to Mamallpuram from the central bus station it was 2 hours journey... The road down the west coast was very odd. The whole area was still recovering from the Tsunami, so there were only new buildings everywhere and lots of open fields with no trees just grass. I checked into the first hotel/Guest house I saw ( Tina's ) which wan run by a man called Xavier, he looked/dressed like a huge fat Buddha. He really didn't care about me staying, having no customer service, except saying “show me the money”. It was 150 rs per night which was ok but I had to ask for clean sheets as the one on my bed had not been cleaned in ... read more
