This beautiful town is a hill station where many South Indians go to for their honeymoon. It is temperate and has a stunning lake surrounded by gum trees. The lake is obviously the main attraction but there is a lot of amazing hiking to be done in the surrounding mountains. Luckily for us, most of my work is on the internet and I have been given permission to spend as much time as we want up here out of the heat. This is a lovely place to visit and it is great to spend some time with my parents and little sister, but some measure of independance is to be desired on your honeymoon. The three hour drive to Madurai is an excellent distance to be from your parents in India: close if you need ... read more

Not bad for 2 days A quick hello to say Happy Easter! We have just awoken a second time on Easter Day. The first was at 5.30am when we trod off to the 6am sunrise Easter service up on top of a mountain with a beautiful view of the hills below. We then joined a big breakfast at the Fisher's house with 300 school families, where there was a lot of, 'Chas and Ana, I would like to introduce you to...'! But it was so lovely because everyone is so excited and happy for us. By 9am we were exhausted, and so it was back to bed again! At least we are awake for the meal times! And yay, no gastro at this stage! It has been 2 and a half days! Our trip started in ... read more

I was bugged up of daily routine of going to office and coming back home..next day continues in the same way..I and my hubby planned for another honeymoon on Dec.25,2006 to Kodaikanal and the scenic beauty we saw was breathtaking...Smoky hills and Misty forests... fresh mountain air...We had booked online through J'sheritage.com having no idea how our trip is going to be. We were treated with luxury. That's what I wanted. SECLUSION, LUXURY and NATURE. We encountered good hospitality, excellent features, well-equipped rooms, close to exotic locales which added a touch of magic to our experience. I would say going to these exotic places should be must to get rid of monotony. ... read more

When we arrived at Madurai bus station we realised we had missed all the hourly buses and there wasn't another one for over 2 hours. After a quick run around the station we realised our only hot food option was the local shack across the street. In places like this there are no menus, the waiter told us the two choices on offer and we chose vegetable biriyani. It was absolutley delicious, really cheap and the service was fantastic. Every time we ran out of one sauce our pot was refilled and plenty of extra rice was dished out at no extra cost. When we got back to the train station a station manager told Ade our bus would be full when it arrived and the journey would take 4/5 hours. Taxi men were offering really ... read more

Kodaikanal, where i have lived for nearly a year. A sweet hill resort with restricted construction and exploitation compared to its close counterpart in the south, Ooty. Though tourists throng as much as ooty, thanks to the the local authorities which prohibits any major constructions or developments that could spoil the serenity of the place. Kodaikanal still remains the same since 1970's despite minor alterations here and there. No new constructions are allowed around the lakeside or in the town. So its a must visit place for retreaters. Its still a quiet hill station as lonely planet quotes but only during weekdays and offseason and dont think anywhere close to the word quiet during season or weekends. 58kms of upward climb from Vatlagundu (Batlagundu) via Ghat Road would take you to Kodaikanal. On the way to ... read more

Finally I took a train to visit my folks in Salem. As usual I don't seem to be able to handle them for more than 24 hours. I stayed with them for a night and the next evening, I wanted to get away from there. It's not like I hate my parents or anything like that. I just feel I can't really relate to them that well these days. Any way, I decided to take a bus to Kodai and camp there for a night or so. I had been to Kodai many times, but I have never climbed up the Perumal Malai peak. I figured that would be a good place for me to camp. The climb was quite easy compared to some of the other treks I have done. It took me about 3 ... read more

After three weeks of Sadhana, we eventually had to move on. Originally our plan had been to go to Kanyakumari, the southern tip of India. However, everyone in Sadhana had been raving about a hill station called Kodai, and so we decided to go, especially as we could travel with Pawel and Sian, the couple from Brighton. Thus, on the 4th of February, we bid a sad goodbye to all at Sadhana and went to Pondicherry to catch the overnight bus to Kodai. The trip was long and it was all but impossible to sleep, Chloe only managed it curled up in a ball like a cat. It was worth it however. We arrived to a great youth hostel and a spectacular view across the clouds and down the mountainside. We spent a relaxing few days ... read more

After a second stop in Madurai, I took the bus up to Kodaiakanal. The only American mission hillstation in India, it is absolutely gorgeous, and after two months of heat, the cold mountain air really reminded me of home. I even had to buy a wool scarf and wear thermal socks to bed! There's a lake with boat club, and the international school set up by the americans is apparently one of India's most prestigious schools now. A bit of an idyllic place to study! I also found a John Wesley methodist church which just opened in January and has all of seven attendees. ... read more

A little Break Its been 3 weeks since I've been in India and I've realized that I'm awful at this travel blog business. The initial excitement quickly wore away once I realized how much work was involved with keeping a travelblog updated. So I just kept a diary instead and am finally putting this online for all of you to see. 5 weeks late but its better than nothing (am I on Indian Standard Time already?) I'm back dating this journal and it was written on the 26th of Feb from Kodaikanal (Kodai for short) in the South of India. Its a small hillstation located in the Western Ghats. It was created by the British as a summer getaway location and the houses and buildings are very British. So until now I've visited a lot ... read more
