The bus ride up here was fantastic probably one of the best I’ve been on so far, literally scaling the huge mountains there were fantastic views across the valleys, and thank god we didn't have a lunatic bus driver. After traipsing round for hours looking for some good old western food (as advertised in the lonely planet) we found nothing, so palak pannier again for me (spinach and cheese curry) and painfully hot masala pad pads (popadom's). I got me and jade lost on one of my short cuts on the first night and spent the next day in bed sleeping as felt a bit ill. Jade on the other hand decided to go out and got stuck in some sort of monsoon with her trusty my blobby pack a Mac. We spent the night in ... read more

It was not hard to pick out the ferry from the knot of boats moored at the quayside. It was a battered old tub with peeling paintwork; its hull scarred and gouged from one too many dockside collisions. The passenger deck was roofed with wood and corrugated iron, while astern; a mess of ropes lay ready for the boat boys to tie-off at each of the village stops the boat would make along the way. The Indian boat pilot sat at the wheel combing his hair. When he was satisfied with the result, he returned the comb to a shirt pocket and began flipping the throttle as if he was eager to leave. Each time he did so, a black gout of diesel smoke belched from the pipe above the passenger deck: Indian public transport at ... read more

Austin - So far India is awesome. The food is great, and the people are very nice. If you don't look out you will get overfed. Be cautious, avoid meet unless assured that it is ok to eat. Stick to being vegetarian and drinking unopened bottled water. Chi, or "tea" in south India, as well as coffee is great and for the most part ok. There are lots of mosquitoes, so bring lots of bug spray, and make sure you are up to date on malaria meds. Be careful with taxi drivers, they will try to get you to buy stuff from people and may change prices around. In Chennai, i recommend Mohan, his phone # is 9941-2218-82. He is nice, a good driver and trustworthy. India is a great place so far. ... read more

I am now in another hill station 2100 meters up called Kodai which is really nice, though we have managed to get here for the bussiest week of the year!!! They have a flower festival going on and all the rooms are taken in the inns. We have managed to scroung a room in the youth hostel which is really a hole, with no shower or toilet just a hole in the floor and a bucket with one tap that works for cold running water; It makes for a brisk wash in the mornings, we can get a bucket of hot water but it all the way up the hill and by the time you are carried it down more of it has tiped out or is down your leg!!! We have rats living in our ... read more

Thursday 10th May 2007 - Wednesday 6th June 2007 Wowee so what the fuck do I say about Vattakanal!!! Vattakanal was my home in India.....Vattakanal is a tiny village (50 people maximum) 3KM outside of a more popular tourist trap called Kodaikanal in the Western Ghats (the mountain range, Tamil Nadu, South India). We took the local bus from Ooty to Combiatore and then took the bus to Palani where we had to spend a night. From Palani we took another local bus, which as per normal was seriously overloaded and we were unable to sit for the 3 hour journey up the mountains. Arriving in Kodaikanal hot, irritated and hungry we found a café and got some food in. I looked around the town asking the westerners I saw the best places to stay. Julian ... read more

I thought a lascivious title such as the above might bring the readers in droves. But it might be better put as 'Sexuality in India'. This is an incredibly interesting and controversial topic and I am far from qualified to speak on the matter so please do not consider the following gospel or expert opinion. I have however travelled to India 3 or 4 times now and certain aspects of their sexuality strike me every time. Let be known that: this is the opinion of one white, male, Christian, Anglo-Australian and should be treated as such! Please, I do not mean to give offence or cause upset, so if you are easily affected by matters sexual, do not read this blog as I feel compelled to write on the issue. Also, for the postmodernists out ... read more

Finally, here is Ana! Well, I spent the first part of the first week in Madurai coming down with a cold, very exciting. I felt so ill on one of the evenings, that Chas looked and me and said, 'Ana, promise me, you won't die tonight'. So I didn't, obviously! But once I had got over that, I had a bit of a look around Madurai. Jordan, who is our wonderfully interesting flat mate (he works with Chas at People's Watch), suggested that I visit the Ghandi Museum. So off I went in an autorickshaw to the museum, hoping that the driver had understood what I meant and wasn't going to drop me off in the middle of nowhere! But I did make it, and it had loads of information on India's fight for independence ... read more
