-- So it's raining here. I'm going to take this opportunity to blog real quick about the first day or so in Chennai. We arrived pretty late the day before last to the Chennai Airport, SO MANY PEOPLE. Trying to get our bags was just.. well.. it would have been funny if I wasn't so tired. Basically there are a million people trying to do the same thing at the same time, with no queuing, or lining up. Everyone is very helpful, it is just hard to get anything done fast when everyone is trying to get things done fast. Driving in Chennai We get into our cab, and we have a substitute driver- because our original driver hit a cow a few days ago and his car will not be fixed for a while or ... read more

On the 25th November, myself and seven fellow dancers travelled to Chennai for a four day night shoot. Chennai is a city in South India and the fourth largest in the country. As we flew in I could see that the buildings of the city were all different colours and fairly low in height - a nice change from Mumbai's maze of beige/cream high rise apartment blocks. On the drive from the airport to our hotel I also noticed there were loads of cows wandering around at the edges and sometimes on the busy roads. Unlike the black and white dairy cows I am used to seeing at home, these were huge creatures with humps on their backs, folds of extra skin underneath their necks and huge horns which were painted red. I have seen a ... read more

FEB 3, 2013 Tambaram to Vedanthangal I planned to see the birds before sunrise. So on this day, I woke up at 4 in the morning (you may call it as a midnight). After freshen up, left from TBM around 4:45 AM & reached Vedanthangal at 5:59 AM. I win, still the sun is sleeping, but not the birds. At-first, went for a hot Tea in the nearby shop. The temperature is not more than 18 -20 deg C, that country made boiler tea sweets good (Sweeeeet). Much prior to my entry, thousands of birds are going out of the sanctuary. Oh! did it afraid of seeing me, no comments....go ahead. Entered into the park, sorry its a sanctuary. (Status of "National Park" is higher; whereas a "sanctuary" is lower.). This d... read more

YUPIII!!!! On avait hate ... read more

This week has been an interesting one. Some days are blurs and some have stood out significantly. I guess the most interesting was to visit a rural community that only has members from a certain high caste living there. We were taken to a local day-care centre where we made a girl cry coz she had never really seen white people before. We were then taken to a local school where we saw some very cute as well as very talented dancers and then met with a local farmer. He had a door frame and door which was all hand carved and was truly beautiful – it was worth 30,000 rupees which is about $667 which is wealth we hadn’t really crossed before. I also ate raw guava-I don’t really rate it! We went on a ... read more

Visit to Elliot's beach It was a one day short business trip I had been to the souther town of Chennai. After finishing my work in the first half of the day, I had nothing concrete to do. My return flight was late in the evening. Since I had company of my business colleague, I thought heading toward one of the famous beaches in Chennai. I had been to Chennai before several times on business. But due to lack of free time, I could not visit the beach before. So, this was an opportunity for me to see the beach. Beach is not new to me, as I am born and brought up in Mumbai, which itself is a beach city. Juhu beach (part of Arabian sea) is a major beach in Mumbai. I always wanted ... read more

Finally reached Chennai where I visited the Christian Missions Charitable Trust which runs a school for kids from the slums and an orphanage. Also, visited the tomb of St. Thomas (doubting Thomas) who brought Christianity to Madras in 52 AD and viewed the world's largest Banyan tree. Since Jan has a wonderful way with words here is her diary entry for her last few days in India: "I left off with our afternoon in Pondicherry. Hugh and I went shopping -- I for a new pair of sandals that would make blisters in a different place than the ones I brought, and Hugh for sari silk for Suzanne, his wife. I was very taken aback at the civility of all the street stalls. They allowed us to browse unmolested, and thanked us for stopping by as we ... read more
