HE SAID... We were leaving Udaipur and travelling north to Pushkar. We woke early, jumped into an auto rickshaw (motorised tricycle with a passenger cabin) at 5am and made our way to the Udaipur train station. We had a chai(tea) as we waited on the platform, boarded the train at 5.30am and set off at 6am for our long journey to Pushkar. We had a five and a half hour train trip to Ajmer and a 30 minute drive to Pushkar ahead of us. We arrived at Ajmer station at 11.30am, jumped off the train, made our way through the crowded platform and shuffled shoulder to shoulder across the walkway to the car park. We found our taxi and headed off to Pushkar at 12pm. We drove through the mayhem and madness of midday traffic in ... read more

Day 12 - a free day in Pushkar Well, I am sorry to disappoint you... But.....I didn't do it! Both Jude and I had such a bad nights sleep. When I was tossing and turning, Jude was.... And vice verse! Jude got up and dressed at one point, thinking she had missed the 4.45 alarm, it was about 2.30, so she got back on her bed fully ready...lol, I was still on the fence about going at that point, but finally decided, I just hadn't had enough sleep to warrant it, as there are never any guarantees that you will even get to see the sunrise, but I hope they do. So, if there are any pictures of the sunrise in Pushkar, I will have ripped them from someone else! Even after Jude had gone, I ... read more

Day11 - Moving on to Pushkar Up at 4.10am. Both Jude and I were up and about ok. We had done all off our preparation and packing last night, so we didn't have much to do. This morning we are travelling to Ajmer by train, and then we will change to a local bus for the 14 km drive over Snake Mountain to Pushkar. Udaipur to Ajmer train takes about 7 hours. The connecting jeeps took about half an hour. On arrival we had time to get refreshed, get something to eat, and a short nap, due to the early start. All these were very welcome! At 5pm we went on an orientation walk with Ankur. As always, he was very guarded with us all. He gave us instructions on how we should respond to the ... read more

Alu Baba Temple Yes you who must leave everything that you cannot control It starts with your family and soon it comes around to your soul It has now become tradition that when I visit Pushkar, I shout a group of friends the cost of preparing the exquisite Rajasthani culinary delight of dahl bati. My first experience of this meal was in 1983 when my Brahmin friend Janadin (now dead) prepared it for me and a few other foreigners and locals. Bati are balls made of flour, desi ghee, haldi, and a few other spices, kneaded and then boiled and slowly baked over smouldering cow dung before again being soaked in desi ghee. A few balls are prepared with sugar and other spices to be broken up and have more ghee added to form tumera (adding ... read more

Old man look at my life, I'm a lot like you were Muni Baba was said by the locals to be at least 120 years old. I needed to see this. There was a festival of celebration and devotion being held over several days in the remote little village temple where he resided in a small dark room with a duni (fire place) in the middle, which exuded far too much smoke than one might think healthy for anyone let alone a man of 120. We went, the four of us, on two bikes to the place – about 10 kms from Pushkar. A nice ride on a good road mostly, and the countryside was looking wonderful and fresh on this winter morning. The other three were locals who had seen Muni Baba before and were ... read more

Accommodation - The Royal Jodphur Camp Weather - Hot & sunny 28C. Cold clear nights 6C Pushkar surrounds a small lake, believed by Hindus to have been created by Lord Brahma, thus making Pushkar an important pilgrimage centre. There are more than 400 temples and 52 ghats surrounding the lake. Pushkar, however, and the reason we were here, is best known for its Camel Fair. Rural tribal traders of camels, horses and other cattle converge from all over Rajasthan, many walking for days driving their camels across the desert mix with pilgrims arriving from all over India and of course a small number of lucky tourists, magazine photographers and TV camera crews. What an unbelievable spectacle this is - tribal locals in colourful robes and turbans, bartering with each other to obtain the best deal for ... read more
