Approaching Jodphur saw the sandstone becoming more pink due to the iron in the sand.Again they haul huge lumps out of the sand and mill it like we do wood. Darker ceilings rather than being wood are of stone.
Along the way we stopped at a Cow Hospital..fascinating...there was A & E , cancer ward, ICU., senile ward. They used 8000KG of feed each day. Happily gave a donation. Cows of course are sacred...the girls kept for milk (yoghurt Panneer etc) and the boys just roam around anywhere.
Hotel in Jodphur was the Rambanka Palace and we immediately felt at home there. Met our guide (Mr Singh) who was wearing a red beret as his granny had died and custom says his head had to be shaved) and arranged to meet him at 2pm for fort and palace tour.Actually very good but as I've mentioned before we have seen heaps and they do get a bit tedious. Very hot and when I asked him what the maximum summer temperature was he said 49 degs as anything above that causes a state of emergency which is expensive so they cap it at 49 but in reality it may hit 54...!.
Back to the Oasis of a hotel and a swim.
Next morning we have a jeep safari in a cool Mahindra jeep with driver and of course Mr Singh in a different beret. We had to not laugh as he called everything " bootiful ""..come and look at this most bootiful ......So the trip was into the country to see wildlife deer antelope etc which we did see and the ethnic Bishnoi people...bish is 20 and noi is nine and they live by 29 rules. Went to a commune. tourist thing ..but we were the only ones and we were even offered a bit of opium which they commonly have in liquid form to get thru a days work in the fields .
Made it clear to Mr Singh that we did not want any tourist shopping so back to hotel and spent a lovely afternoon in pool and lying on these wonderful day beds on the lawn with a g n t or 2.
Tomorrow 25/9 off to Jojawar a little village with a ' romantic' Havelli
