Well our journey from Pushkar to Jaisalmer was probably one of the most uncomfortable and frustrating journeys that we have had in four months. After the wedding our friend from the hotel walked us to an area out of town that we were supposed to catch a shuttle to our bus. First of all the shuttle didnt come for about 2 hours after expected and it was freezing cold. When the shuttle finally came we all boarded on...about 10 people over capacity and headed to Ajmer to catch the bus. On the way we got a flat tire and had to stop for a while until that was somehow repaired. We then continued on to the bus stop only to hear that the bus was going to be 2 hours later!! Thats Indian time for you. When the bus came we were so excited because we booked sleeper class and were expecting a nice bed and good nights sleep since we could lay down rather than sitting. Were we ever wrong! Imagine being stuck in an ice box and dragged down the road behind a truck. That was the feeling of being in a sleeper bus. It was horrible! Even a
Our hotel room!
Probably one of the most pleasant rooms we have had so far. Can't go wrong for 10$ I felt like a princess since this was right in the fort seat would have been more comfortable. 12 hours later we arrived in Jaislamer.
It is a really nice change from the typical Indian cities that we have been going to. There is one area that is completly enclosed in a fort where you can walk through and see the lives of the people, explore the streets and even eat and sleep. There are no vehicles and rickshaws allowed so it makes it a more pleasant place to walk around. The other part of Jaisalmer is enclosed in city walls. The population is only like 80000 compared to most cities we have been to at 5-18 million..yikes!
When we arrived in Jaisalmer we went straight to bed and slept for most of the day. The bus trip took so much out of me I couldnt even think of going and seeing the town luckily we were planning on staying a few days. We then set out for dinner with some friends that we met from Germany. It was pretty funny we could not find a decent Indian restaurant to go to, just Italian restaurants. It was a nice change though especailly how I just got over a little sickness.
The streets inside the fort
It was amazing to just walk through the streets and see all the homes of the people and look around in all the shops After one night of staying outside the fort we decided we would move inside because it was a much better atmosphere. We found a beautiful hotel to stay in for only 10$ a night! The next day we went and explored all through the fort visitng some temples and talking with the locals. It is always interesting to talk to them because everyone is always so friendly and you will talk with them for an hour about whatever and it turns out they always have something to sell to you. Never just want to talk..haha. After seeing everything inside the fort we went to the old city. in the old city there are a bunch of old Havelis dating back 500 years ago. They still look so beautiful and new. I think it is because they are made out of Sandstone and it doesnt decay. The designs and detail that is put into these buildings is absolutly amazing. I didnt realize how much I appreciated architecture until I came to India.
We didn't really do too much more in the town of Jaislamer but it was very pleasant place to be. We spent about 5 days in total
Outside the fort
Looks like a giant sandcastle there which is more than the usual 2-3 days but I'd have to say it was one of my favorite cities so far on the trip. I'd still be there if we had more time! We did some shopping in the city on our last day before setting out on our camel safari. Dave bought a cool bright yellow Turban and I just bought a scarf for the safari other than that just hung out and soaked up the surroundings.
Our last day in the area we went on a camel safari through the desert. We usually shop around for these type of things but this time we didnt and we got punished. We ended up paying about 3 times more than we should have. I guess we were expecting a better trip though but still it was probably just as good as the others. We started in the morning and had a desert breakfast. We then met up with our camels that we would be with for the day. My camels name was Mr. Magoo and he was probably the best behaved camel of the group. All the camels that we were riding were all males and when
Rajastani Women
They always wanted their pictures taken and always wanted pictures of me. They think im strange apparently because they never stop staring! they saw the one female camel on the safari they all went crazy except mine! It was quite scary to see though.
The camels are definatly not the most comfortable animals out there. After about 2 hours I was so uncomfortable I didnt want to sit any longer. Around lunch time we stopped at a neat village that was filled with mud huts, village kids and farm animals. It was cool to see the way of life. These people probably havent even been to the town of Jaisalmer let alone to anywhere else. The kids all wanted their pictures and videos taken because i dont think they had ever seen that. They all ask for school pens but i dont really understand that? After the village and lunch we continued on for another hot afternoon. Around 6pm we arrived in the sand dunes to watch the sunset and have dinner. It was really relaxing after riding the camel all day! After dark it was also really beautiful seeing all the stars since there was no other lights. Anyways these blogs are getting annoying to write but i will try to keep up with them!
