One of the largest step wells in India built in the eighth century. Temple is dedicated to Harshat Matt. Defaced by invading Moghuls. Stone carvings stored at step well to preserve these antiquities. Women began covering themselves after this to protect themselves from invading armies.

Wait, what's this about the reason for women covering themselves?
Are you saying that the covering of women starting from their own volition? I would go do some research but am working on my propositions. Thanks for sharing great photos!

Women covering themselves.
The story we got was women might originally have been bare to the waist. They would have been quite desirable to Moghul invaders. To protect the women, their men covered them. Later it became a moral issue, like corsets and girdles. They do have their functional aspects.

There is still water in it, but it is full of algae. It would be possible to use the water if treated.
