When I woke up at 6:45AM, it was so dark in the room that I was convinced sunrise wasn't going to happen any time soon. So after snoozing my alarm for about half an hour, I got up, had a shower that only had lukewarm water, then went outside to discover that the sun had already risen. If only I'd noticed that I was in a ground floor room in a triangular courtyard of a two storey hotel, so the light had been blocked out ... It was rather on the chilly side, but I soon forgot about that when the temple complex hove into view, with the golden domes of one of the shrines standing out in the dawn haze. I had to leave my socks and boots at a storage point, then tiptoed gingerly ... read more

I had a good night's sleep considering all the activities that conspired to stop me. The sink tap in the bathroom dripped constantly, however maybe this acted on my brain like a lullaby, in the same way a gently burbling stream might do. And at 6AM a mass throat-clearing erupted from the other residents of the hotel as well as the neighbours. On that subject, it's amazing just how much phlegm people are capable of producing - not just the gargantuan gozzers first thing in the morning, but the other offerings throughout the day. The hot water in my shower proved to be as much of a myth as I had suspected. On a relative scale, it was warmer than the cold water, but on an absolute scale it was a little tepid. Again, my hair ... read more

Our first trip on Indian Railways, and we have to say we're impressed. You get the full in-flight service- complimentary newspapers, mineral water, unlimited tea and biscuits, bread and jam, and then a main course (veg/ non-veg) followed by interminable more rounds of tea. If they did Shiatsu massage as well it would be just like Virgin Atlantic. Our first step in Amritsar was to check into the Grand Hotel. Big mistake! But more on that later. We headed to Wagga, the only open land border between India and Pakistan, to see the famous border ceremony. You may have seen this Pythonesque performance on one of the Michael Palin/ Dan Cruickshank programmes. It kicks off at about 4pm, when a contingent of magnificently galoshed, moustachioed guards wearing flamenco fans on their heads goose-step to the border ... read more

The atmosphere in the Golden temple compound is electric. The temple is the best I've seen in India, the dome is gilded with 750kg of pure gold. When entering the temple we had to remove our shoes, wash our feet, and cover our heads. Ate in the Guru-Ka-Langar, it is a free community dining room. They serve hundreds of pilgrams a day. ... read more

Traveled to Amritsar on a "luxurious" DVD bus! Very loud distorted Indian music accompanied by western-influenced music videos on repeat - occasionally the bus driver added the 5 harmonies of his horn - an enchanting experience. Sadly the bus broke down every 10 minutes so we were delayed for an hour. Eventually we gave up and took an autorickshaw to the city center. Felt great to be in a real Indian city after spending all of that time in Dharamsalla. ... read more

Ok, I left off on Thursday, November 3rd. On Friday, we went to the small town of Palmpur via two buses (30 minutes and 2+ hours). The second bus was overcrowded and hot. Any way, we made it in time for a quick lunch in town before we got an auto rickshaw to take us just outside of town to the Palmpur Tea Co-operative. There, the manager gave the two of us a great tour. Even though the last processing day for the year was October 31st, he still demonstrated all the equipment. We learned lots about tea processing; such as there are three harvests (called blushes) in a year. The first blush is the best as the plant had all winter to acquire its character. The plant we visited processed a black rolled tea. This ... read more

Hi, After leaving Lee (the Taiwan woman) in McLeod, we continued with the holy mission of adopting a single non-Israeli backpacker. On the bus to Amrtiser, we have gathered with Traver. Comparing to our diffculties to communicate Lee (she knew very little English), our commuinication with Traver was much more fluent. Well, he is from the USA and he does know some English. It is very unique to find an American backpacker, they hardly travel. He is a really nice guy, and of course, since he travels, not a typical American. I found his appearnce resembles to a Greek god statue. Eventually, I told him that and he said that people say to him that he reminds Gene Wilder and this is also true. The golden temple in Amritser is beutiful. Many pilgrims visit this holy ... read more

After resting for so many days in McLeod Ganj, we decided it was time to move on and see some of India. We took the easy way and rented a jeep with a driver, to do the 200km 5 hours journey (yes... that's India) to Amritsar. Amritsar is the holiest city for the Sikh, the guys with the funny thing on their head (just kidding, they are nice people!) and the main site is the golden temple. We arrived in the evening and decided to go to Laurence road, which is the modern part of town - relatively speaking of course. As it is in India, there were some very nice shops, elegant and some in western style, fancy Pizza Hut, and all that among market style shops and stalls and plenty of dirt and garbage. ... read more

From a temple covered with gold to a temple covered with rats After having spent the first days in Delhi and Agra we felt that we wanted to travel to some of the other places we had on our agenda for this trip. First we went to the city Amritsar. Amritsar Amritsar is in Punjab in the northwest of India, not far from the border of Pakistan. Golden Temple, Amritsar On this trip we wanted to see some of the more spectacular sites in India. The Golden Temple in Amritsar easily qualifies as a spectacular site. The Golden Temple is a holy site for the Sikhs. The central part of the temple is a building covered with gold leaf, hence the name of the temple. The Golden Temple is far more than just its grand gilded ... read more
