Amazingly I have spent almost a week in Delhi without either: - Killing half the population - Finding cheaper accomodation - Bitten my arm off in a fit of boredom - Tried desperately to leave I have, in fact, quite enjoyed my time here. After traveling for more than 2 months its nice to just camp down somewhere and have the same pillow for a few nights in a row. Also there have been important football games and other reasons to stay indoors and just watch tv in the evenings. Hanging out with Paroma and Raj has also been great fun. I am seeing them again tonight. Tomorrow I finally DO leave Delhi. I decided to splurge on return flights to Guwahati in Assam over in the small teardrop of India that sits between Bangladesh and ... read more

Shillong is high in the hills of Megahalaya. In fact, almost from the moment our shared Sumo ( a model of 4wheel drive about the size of a Toyota Landcruiser) started out from Guwahati, we climbed slowl, continuously up a very winding and crowded road. Along the way we passed through heavy rain and hail - not uncommon, so it was just as well we were not motorcycling as originally planned!! Shillong was the capital of Assam state when it encompassed all the "seven sister states" that now make up the North east of India. So it is full of pieces of British colonial legacy: lots of army camps (with manicured gardens), schools, Christians, and churches, and other interesting pieces of architecture. Many of the old houses seem to be part brick, and part wattle and ... read more

Look at my photos from Providence at face value and you will see only bright smiles and happiness. Laughing children playing and learning in a mismatch of clothing and various states of dishevel (but they all seem to have shoes). A school facility that offers shelter, running water and even electricity. The classrooms have colourful tables and chairs, murals, blackboards, pencils, chalk. Food served at lunchtime, children playing marbles. But scratch the surface and discover some shocking truths - a smile can be deceiving. My volunteer experience in India is without question the best experience I’ve ever had in my life. Life-changing you might say. This blog is of epic proportion because I never want to forget the experience. The blog lag is because I wanted to ensure my words did the experience justice. Admittance to ... read more

I visited this little charming capitol city in the northeast of India few years ago when my sister lived there. They call it 'an Abode in the clouds' and it lived up to the title - lots of beautiful clumps of clouds put up a dazzling display in the crystal blue sky when I was in air. I had heard about this quaint archery gambling in Shillong before my trip. I was eager to see it. So I asked my brother in law to take me to the club. It turned out to be something very similar to racing courses albeit in a small campus. The atmosphere was very much like a pub with a dart competition. Little huts sporting charming little ladies with bright red as lips and tongues due to betel-leaves chewing, selling local ... read more

I've covered a few miles since my last entry! The last time I wrote I was Bhubaneswar, Orissa. I left Orissa on Monday morning at 6am on the train to Kolkata. We booked tickets through an agent but didn't really check the tickets properly before travelling. They had me down as male. The conductor came round and wasn't accepting the ticket. I had my first proper taste of the Indian way of sorting things out...Swarup asked to talk to the guy outside so they disappeared between compartments. The conductor accepted a 50Rs bribe instead of paying for a new ticket which would have been 400Rs. Later another conductor came round and was not so corrupt and we ended up having to pay again! The train was ok but we weren't in the AC compartment which we ... read more

Meghalaya seems to be somewhat of a forgotten paradise, perhaps that is because it is the wettest place on earth and is often shrouded in fog... In fact the name means "abode of the clouds"... But even though we came here during the start of the rainy season we have been very lucky and had very little rain... Shillong the capital is one of the nicest cities in India; it certainly is the cleanest city I have been to in India... It is full of lakes and parks and a very interesting market... It used to be called the "Scotland of the East" back when it was a hill station for the British... I wouldn't call it that, but is has it's charms, even if it doesn't have the kilts and the bagpipes... We stayed in ... read more

The bus ride was one of the funniest things i have ever done. It took an hour before we even left as they had overbooked the bus!!! and they had to move everyone around, as women and men are not allowed to sit next to one another, let along sleep next to each other!!! So i got a lower birth bed/seat...it is a seat which you can totally lie flat...which was fine, they tried to make me lay down and when i said i would do it later as i did not want to sleep at 9 in the evening, they gave me a worried and confused look and then stormed away, i sat for a bit watching the country side go by and wondering if the bus would make it up the hills, as the ... read more

First off, Happy Spring! Second, apologies for not writing sooner. It’s been a crazy month since the last time I wrote. So, as you can imagine, it’s hard to even begin to write about my experiences. I will try to keep it short, if that is even possible. So it begins: After Kerala, I headed to Maharastra to see Pink Floyd in Mumbai and quickly fled the city after the concert on a midnight train to…. Jalgaon- not quite Georgia. However, I ended up on the wrong overnight train (not sure how that happened) with a second class general passenger ticket… To give you an idea of how it works- this class of ticket has no reservations, they just squeeze as many people as possible like packed sardines, bodies everywhere and it’s not a pleasant ... read more

The bus drops us at the junction to Shillong, where the road back to Guwahati forks sharply uphill next to a small Hindu temple. It is midday and the sun is beating down on us as we re-load the bikes, which have emerged unscathed from the back of the bus - no damage and only 2 minutes to load and unload at either end, and cheaper than putting them on the train. We vow to use buses from now on if we don’t want to cycle. After a quick feast of fried rice at a small dhaba opposite the temple we are ready for the long slog uphill. We will not reach Shillong today but hope to escape the heat and get halfway up the Meghalayan Massif, an isolated 2000m high rolling plateau that sits south ... read more

Summary: I've been scrambling down a cliff cutting my way through dense forest, trying not to get lost, to get to the base of the a stunning waterfall, met a great Khasi family and had my picture taken a lot. I made only three trips to this region sadly but what trips! Just a little background first. This is the wettest place on earth, Cherapunjee (the local name is Sohra - Cherapunjee is the British name) town itself held the record until a couple of years ago when the nextdoor town of Mawsynram snatched the title. They have an average rainfall of over 11m/year and mawsynram once recieved over 20m! On top of this ridiculously large figure they get it all concentrated over one relatively short period in summer! When I was there however it was ... read more
