We traveled to a little hill station about 100 km east of Mumbai. This little hill town doesn't allow any type of motorized transport, a great respite from the traffic of Mumbai! It was also neat because we took a little "toy train" up through amazing scenery to get to the town (altitude 800m.)

The special 'toy train' took us up the mountain to Matheran. It was small ... holding less than 50 people. We paid extra whopping $4 to get a 'first' class car, which didn't seem to be much different than the 2nd class car, maybe a little roomier ;)

It was a beautiful (and a little scary) ride up to Matheran. Luckily, we had the comfy 1st class car, on the way to where we caught this train, we took a regular, very crowded train. On that train, I was almost hanging out the door, holding on for dear life. That wouldn't have been fun looking out over the edge of the mountain!
