I woke up at 0930 after a good 9 hours sleep. My earplugs were still intact, and I'd only briefly heard Molly Brown once. It was quite light in the tent though so I don't know if it was this or the snoring that stirred me but I soon fell back to sleep and didn't even hear my room buddy shower and leave. I felt so refreshed, and hopefully that may have been the last of the Jetlag on its way out. I managed to catch the end of the breakfast buffet, where only Raghu was dining so I joined him and was offered a cup of Masala tea. He told me it was very gingery which made me think of Reuben and I resolved to call it a Reuben brew from now. It was really ... read more

I had THE BEST sleep ever, and was up and out for 7am as we were getting the train at 8pm. Initially the train seemed like it was on time as it was pulling into the station, but then Raghu said it would be 3 hours late due to engine failure! We were told to expect this from Indian trains, so it was a case of stand and wait. Ten minutes later we were hurrying to get on, it was only stopping for 5 minutes so with bags as well you have to move fast. The first lot of carriages whizzed by, and it was almost like an overcrowded prison on wheels. There were arms sticking out of barred windows, and it looked crammed to the rafters. Our carriage arrived and thankfully it was the better ... read more

After a couple amazing days in Agra it was time to wind down a little and just absorb it all. It was such a great place to get to and see the Taj!!! Just the fact that we got to see it and get right up close to it after reading about it and seeing pictures of it in magazines, it was beyond anything I could possible try to write down in words. There are certain moments or certain things that you see if life that you just can't put into words. It's just one of those 'Ya had to be there' moments. The best part was we got free time to walk around and just soak it all in and sit and try to comprehend that you are in a place that is really old ... read more

Asia » India » Madhya Pradesh » Gwalior January 1st 2015

I was visiting Gwalior for the second time - the first visit was actually hilarious. This was about 2 years back when my parents were excited to get me married. I met my first alliance then. Well, this time the visit was planned as my parents had shifted to this city. One day before the trip, i started preparing my itinerary, Gwalior fort and Saas-bahu temple being my top priority. My first halt was Delhi - which was chilling on the New Year's Eve. From the nation's capital I boarded a train to Gwalior. It was night by the time I reached my destination. My second day started with a layer of deep fog all over - we were struggling to even get out of the blankets. We somehow managed to get of our place by ... read more

My recent visit of Kanha National Park was an out-of-the-world experience of exploring the awesome national sanctuary of tigers, and many other rare mammals and birds, though we missed the Jungle Royalty’s view by a hair’s breadth. It is thanks to a 1,000 strong IFS officers and staff of the Department of Forest of Madhya Pradesh that the trip gives a world class experience in its 5 hours Gypsy Safari. Though the conservation contemplation as a nature lover leaves me with more headache than a heady memory. Sighting a tiger is a subtle act. Look for PIP(pug-mark impressions); have an ear for the long warning calls of deer, the birds’ sudden chirpings, movement of deer, monkeys, and birds. The Kanha park guides and even drivers like Mr. Ali are thoroughly trained in it. Mr. Tomar, our ... read more

A young age memory of a Bollywood movie depicting the hero from royal family of Tikamgarh had conjured up a colourful imagery in my mind. A few years ago, spotting a narrow bridge across the forlorn river Betwa at Orchha bearing sign, 'way to Tikamgarh' further bolstered that imagery. So when working on a project called for a trip to Tikamgarh, I earnestly looked forward to it! We boarded the early morning Shatabdi Express leaving at 6.00 AM for Bhopal from New Delhi Railway station and reached Jhansi before 11 AM. This was in third week of August and the entire central India was under the spell of a heavy monsoon flooding all its rivers and catchment areas. Our escorts at Jhansi informed us that we would need to travel via Jhansi – Khajuraho Road and ... read more

Madhya Pradesh beckons…the heart of incredible India! On a longish weekend, we set out from New Delhi to the hitherto unexplored Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh (MP). A 50-minute ATR flight from Delhi's swanky airport terminal, T-3 brought us to the dusty, dreary city of Gwalior leaving us breathless as we savoured the sights and stories of its royal past. Thanks to the net, we had booked ourselves in the hotel, Tansen Residency, a mid-budget property owned by MP Tourism located on Mahatma Gandhi Road quite close to the railway station. The hotel offers 12 AC deluxe suites and 24 double-bed accommodations. The AC room with attached toilet allotted to us was quite spacious facing a well manicured garden of the hotel. MP Tourism scores much better than the average state-run tourist lodges especially for their ... read more

Hi everyone, I'm a day late updating my blog as I have been on Orchha today. We travelled from Agra by train and mini bus. We left the hotel at 7.10am and went to the station where we said goodbye tour driver and his helper and boarded the 8am ish train. I have to say that my first experience of Indian trains is ver favourable! We all had seats with plenty of leg room. The seats were arranged in a 3 and 2 combination with a much wider isle than UK trains and we had reclining seats. and finally we were served breakfast with tea/coffee, hot meal similar to aeroplane food, I had the omelette which included a few peas and some fries, two, pieces of bread and butter, a bottle of water and a drink made ... read more

Orchha March 16th 2014 “Rivers are roads that walk and carry where you want to go” Blaise Pascal “..To be on your own With no direction home Like a complete unknown Like a rolling stone” Bob Dylan The river Betwa flows lazily through Orchha in Madhya Pradesh, dropping polished stones on its banks. While taking a sunrise bath, I chance upon and pick up a small stone, place it back, pick it up again, feel it feeling me, how it fits so snug and right somehow in my hand, its cool and smooth surface against my skin; and decide that here is the perfect travel companion for making my morning chai. Beb had given me this simple idea while travelling together in Gujarat weeks earlier, but we had not found quite the right rock. It's so ... read more

It’s a well-known fact that, people tend to ignore the beauty around them in search of something far away. And yes that’s exactly what happened in my case. My native place is a small town known as “katni”, in the state of Madhya Pradesh (MP). Just 85 kms away from katni, Bandhavgarh national park is situated, where the density of Bengal tigers is highest known in the world. This place was declared as a national park in the year 1968 and spreads over an area of 440/sqkm (including the buffer zone). Royal Bengal tigers were first introduced in the forest by the Maharaja of Rewa and the forest was a hunting ground for him, until it was declared a national park. And guess what; in all those years when I was in Katni, I had never ... read more
