I was really lucky to go to Kerala along with my family and on top of that.........my love for hill stations made me even happier to visit Munnar. Though it was a short trip ( Just from Morning 11AM to Sunset), I can remember each and every moment of that trip. So I felt that my travelling experience is worth sharing here. Right after my semester exams, I was really yearning for a break after the hectic study and work. To my delight, my dad planned a trip for Kerala, which was most welcoming during monsoon and winter. We headed from Hyderabad to Kochi on 24th November 2005..........and I could instantly feel the difference between Kerala and other south indian states I've visited. I then understood why Kerala is called the "God's own country"........it was as ... read more

Now let me tell you about how I came to be staying in such a beautiful place as Kaivalyam Yoga Retreat. Back at the beautiful Rose Garden homestay, I called Kaivalyam and asked if I could stay until the 7th. In previous emails I had established that this place was too expensive for me but they said that I could stay at a homestay nearby and still come to Kaivalyam for all my food and yoga. This was at a heavily reduced price which I could afford and this is what I asked for. Harish said that there was plenty of room and I could stay with them for the same price. Wow! Well this place is like a 5 star retreat. It’s only been open for 2 weeks so some things aren’t quite finished, but ... read more

I spent what ended up being my last day in Tamil Nadu on the back of Heidi’s motorbike looking around Auroville. She explained how Auroville works and showed me some beautiful community buildings and homes. It’s a very interesting place. She even booked for the two of us to go into the Matri Mandir for mediation, an experience not to be missed. Thank you Heidi. I had time for a bit of a rest - I needed it, then I walked to a favourite restaurant to meet Susan for dinner. While I was waiting I had a call from the ISHA foundation where I shall be working in Coimbatore saying that they could not give me accommodation until 7th April. So what to do until then? When Susan arrived I told her about the conversation that ... read more

The Mountains bring peace! With every mile the bus bumped and jolted along the air became clearer, cooler, calmer and refreshing. The 4 hr journey rewarded us with gum trees, cardamon, and tea fields as far as the eye could see. Valleys and mountains sliced through by silver waterfalls, Hurrah for Munnar!! We can hug without breaking into a profuse sweat. Result. We spent a week exploring the hills, both on foot and rickshaw...we discovered hidden villages, rivers, lakes, flowers spices, and elephants...all the while accompanied by swathes of green green tea. The tea fields, the highest in the world, are owned by the TATA corporation. They control the whole town, schools, utilities ect. Not bad in a communist ruled province. The spice plantations and virgin teak forests surround the tea. Views into neighboring Tamil Nidoo ... read more

As you approach Munnar from Periyar, the rolling hills are covered with tea planets that are arranged in rows that appear like scales on a reptile’s skin. Interspersed between rows of scales in the reptile's skin are various types of tall trees that help shade the tea leaves from the hot sun. The tea plants would grow into trees if allowed but they are pruned to a height of about 3 feet once every three years so they remain short enough so workers can harvest the leaves as they walk down the rows of tea leaves. Our driver Jacob, said that the land is all under a 999 year lease to the Tata family. He said that 16000 people live on and work the land. They are paid about 100 rupees per day ($2.25) per ... read more

I just remembered the little goat that followed us home in Kochi -- some cities have monkeys, some lots of cows, some squirrels, and Kochi has goats -- cute, little, white ones. Used for milk, I think. Anyway, one night on the way home, we had stayed a bit too late in the "bar" and walked home through completely deserted streets when suddenly we saw a little goat standing in the middle of the road, bleating it's cute little goat bleat and seemed to be lost. So we spoke to her and from that moment on she followed us and when we came to the hotel she followed us right through the front door and would have came up the stairs with us if the night watch man didn't shoo her away. So we took a ... read more

A seven and a half hour journey from the lush and fertile plains of Tamil Nadu through the verdant jungle clad hills known as the Cardamic Hills or Western Ghats. After winding our way through the narrow and steep roads the scenery started to change as we approached Munnar. The sweeping hills are almost covered in their entirety with tea plantations stretching for miles. Munnar, being about six thousand feet above sea level and located in just under sixty thousand acres of sprawling tea plantations, was first established by the British in 1878. The town was also a summer resort for the British government in South India, no doubt due to its pleasant yet not overbearing temperature. Many of the tea plantations are owned by a company known as TaTa which seems to have its fingers ... read more

Walking through the lush green hills outside of Munnar I kept having distracting thoughts about snakes. I had traveled up into Indian hill country and was walking through tea plantations that dotted the rolling hillside. One time I even thought I saw something move out of the corner of my eye, but it turned out just to be a stick. A second time it wasn't a snake, but a large lizard that caught my eye. But the third time there was no question about it - a 5 foot long snake was quickly slithering into the brush. Now I have nothing against snakes, and was intrigued by the chance to photograph one in the wild in India. However, given that there are snakes here venomous enough to kill an elephant, I wanted to make sure that ... read more

Kumily is a great place to visit just for the town itself. Its a busting spice town set in the mountains and lush green rolling hills of the Western Ghats. Its also the gateway to the Periyar Nature reserve - famous for its tigers and elephants..... but unless you have a helicopter - don't think you will see any! Gail and I arrived in Kumily after the bus trip from hell and checked into Elephant Hills Cottages - where we got a huge room, TV and comfy bed each for 300 R.... Bargain and just what we both needed after 3 weeks in a dormitory and a few nights bunking in in Varkala! All in the name of saving money of course - but sometimes a bit of solitude can do you the world of good! ... read more
