Kumily> I stay the night here then leave lunchtime 06/03/16 reaching cheruthoni for an afternoon visit to udikki Dam, Kerala has heaps of hydro, this being the second tallest in all India hosting a very picturesque mountain reservoir behind (though, all photos prohibited). Spend a quiet Sunday night in a local lodge before 07/03/16 heading via Adimali to non descript town Kalady with a plan to use the forest road north of here to reach Athriapally for some water fall action. Unsurprisingly tricky to translate my intentions at the bus stand, while grabbing a cornetto I spy a bus going to malayatoor which is roughly correct, from there I establish the right road and head out on foot a fair distance before getting a hand from a quarry truck then bunny a bike I reach more solid road and frequent housing, jump in a passing tuk tuk before reaching a police forest check post, then catch a bus a stretch further finishing off the last 10k of forest to Athriapally in the dark by hitching another bike>whilst holding on to the drivers large bag of green beans (couldn't really advise this stubborn choice of shortcut but it was a fun success).
Snuff out a 300 rupee stay near the falls for the night, 08/03/16 return bus to the falls in the morning> a triple drop pluming loud white water with surrounding jungle makes a good visit considering the dry season.
Bus west to chalakady, then south via Muvattupuzha to Kottayam for a nights stay in town. 09/03/16 with researched intentions to ferry from Kottayam to Alleppy I find the jetty to be greened over and derelict, returning to town, a switch of bus stands I head to outlaying canal village Kanjuram and wait until 1pm for the next boat. Nearly 3 hour trip to Alleppey through the open span of backwater between. Spend two nights in alleppey taking it easy with a tweaked ankle, catch the 11/03/16 backwater/tourist ferry to Kollam, a full day cruise, stay the night and 12/03/16 catch a lunchtime 4hr bus up to Kochi hopping over to a homestay in fort kochi by another ferry.
13/03/16 Stroll around the likeable Fort Kochi for the day and its handful of Portuguese churches, 14/03/16 hop north over to Cherai beach on Vypin island for the morning, return for a fish lunch & later
make the audience of the daily kathalai theatre performance, vibrant & dramatic. Conclude my three nights at crystalica homestay and 15/03/16 switch over to 200 rupee stay in main Cochin Enerikulam, an enjoyable day at the movies supplemented by a great curry house over the road between showings! 16/02/16 Catch a 6.30am airport bus and land in Colombo for 11am, fluke a free lift into town and bus to city centre finding a cheapish stay on a fragrant back street of spice traders. Stroll through the market streets toward modern town, catch a movie and grab a prawn curry. 17/03/16 visit a couple of temples inside Colombo town, chill out in the park and watch another movie.
