on your bikes!
I loved exploring the countryside on the mopeds.. and thank god, not too much traffic out here! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
I think the last time i wrote i told you that i was going to be hiring a moped and doing some exploring in Goa.. it was amazing! so nice to have the wind in your hair and the world at your feet!! .. and i came back with everything in tact!! i thoroughly reccomend it!
We enjoyed our stay in Goa and celebrated Charlie's birthday in style (he got legless!!) and we went to a head phone party!!.. For those that haven't experienced this let me explain!; they can't play loud music after 11.30 so they have got round this by hiring out wireless headphones to party goers - i actually really liked it because you don't have to shout above the racket.. just take your headphones off!! In fact i didn't hire the headphones because they had run out when we arrived (!!) however it was great to hang out there and chat to a few people.. Charlie didn't seem to like it as much as me, and i have to say it is a bit weird,if you don't have headphones, to see everyone dancing around the place!
The next day we were heading
sawing the lock
i was't surprised i managed to loose the key.. but it was b***dy annoying! further south on the train... we had a slight set back when i realised i'd lost the key to my padlock so locking my backpack to a chair in our room!! (i have realised i definatley have an issue with loosing keys on this holiday and so Charlie has now forbidden me to keep any!) luckily i had befriended a neighbouring indian man who had a saw!!!
The train to Kerala and Ernakulum was great.. i am really loving the indian trains! We shared a carriage with a lovely swedish couple. Just before we all went to sleep there daughter asked the father to speak to a young indian boy to turn his music down. The father went off and did this and came back. However the music seemed to get louder and the boys had now turned thier speakers in our direction... it transpired that the father had asked the boys to make their music 'louder' rather than 'quieter'!! they were very sweet and did eventually turn it down after much laughter!! (i love the trains!)
We very nearly missed our stop .. not surprising since it was at 2.30 in the morning.. luckily charlie woke as the
the Ali Baba pants
SO these are the infamous ali baba trousers!! i now have THREE pairs.. train came to a halt and we had to fly out chucking our bags on the platform and breaking into fits of laughter! we hd made it in the nick of time!
Last night.. New Years Eve we were in Fort Kochin where we watched a boxing match in the town square (very random!!) it was great.. they started with the young girls (who really weren't very good!!) then the young boys.. i reckon i could have given them a run for their money!! .. great to see.. i think the Indian men watching were amazed that i (a white woman) was watching; i kept getting pushed to the front of the crowd of men and finally found myself standing next to the judges being stared at by all the men around me!
.. oh and very exciting news - i have bought ANOTHER pair of Ali baba pants.. and have attached a photo of them for those that don't know what they are!! ... i think you will agree they are gorgeous!!
We are now in Allepey and getting ready to board a boat and travel on the backwaters down to Kollam and then onto Varkala.
Chinese fishing nets
We went to the local fish market and watched the Indian men haggling over fish and then selling them on and offering to cook them.. 'you buy we cook'!! yum I hope you all had a fabulous New Years Eve and i hope your year has started in the same fantastic way that mine has.. i really do feel so lucky to be doing this.. i am loving every minute of it!!

Ali baba pants
Amelia will be so delighted when she finds out you now have 3 fabulous pairs of Ali bab pants! I must say there's no way anyones going miss you in those green ones! We all had a wonderful Christmas in Suffolk and spent New Years Eve in London with the Tongs. As you can well imagine, it was a very drunken and extremely noisy occasion. We didn't get to bed until 3.45am. Loving your blogs and wish you and Charlie a very happy new year.
