Our previous entry now has pictures... see the link... http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/India/Goa/Panaji/blog-206016.html With that...Hello everyone! Welcome to what will possibly be the funniest, grossest, and perhaps even the longest entry we have made to date. Now, if that doesn't scare or titilate you, then you are a cold character indeed! We have now been in India for almost 3 weeks, and our experiences have been outrageous to say the least, although they have built in such small degrees as to be fairly unnoticed by us until it hit home in a conversation the other day. Hopefully in giving an account of our recent activities, we'll adequately describe a few observations of general life in India... We will begin with BUSES, and the reasoning behind the title of this entry, so inspired by our travels to/through Goa, and into ... read more

Hi Everyone, After a short hiatus, I still have not got myself together enough to write another blog. I've been preparing, collecting notes and writing a whole lot in my personal journal. Unfortunately, I've left said journal in our hotel room and to post without the aid of my notes is impossible. We're disappearing into the jungle for a few days and an internet connection is doubtful but when I emerge, I promise to indulge you in my longest blog yet. Sarah seems to have kept you up to date on our travels so I won't repeat the details but she and I are both quite weary from all of the bumpy bus rides and overnight train expeditions we've endured in the past week or so. We've got the serenity of the rainforest and the spirituality ... read more

Ok, so when the Lonely Planet call's a place "beautiful", one generally tends to assume that one won't be stepping off the bus into mayhem and dirt. Ah, but then one would be assuming wrong. After a five hour, bone jarring, terrifying, wish-I-could-teleport-myself bus ride to Kottayam, twelve hours on a train (the only humane way to travel) to Managalore, overnight, where we had to beg our way into the AC compartment for a bed, and then another five hour body-rattling and bruising bus ride up to Madikkeri, we stepped off the bus glad to be on solid ground, and took our first look at the "beautiful" Madikkeri. Hmmmm. It was noisy, yes, dirty, yes, there was litter everywhere, yes, but "beautiful seemed a bit of a stretch. We started calling hotels only to find ... read more

I went to visit Pema and Sonam at their Temple in Mysore and it was really great to see them again. Pema is a temple artist. He paints the beautiful images inside the temple. The picture I took of one of the paintings really doesn't do his work justice. They also managed to wangle their way into the Dalai Lama's private residence area of the neighbouring temple, where the DL stays when he visits. It was very peaceful and calm. We gave offerings. A place I definitely want to visit again, although next time I might get a proper permit as it's actually a restricted area so foreigners aren't meant to enter the settlement at all!! :)... read more

We are now in the State of Karnataka. I'm writing from the town of Madikeri, it's a small town of about 100,000 around 1500 meters from sea level. The views are beautiful, and there are coffee plantations all around. Nice relaxed place, it seems the further south we go the more relaxed it is.. on to Mysore. ... read more

We left around midnight on Friday to travel overnight by minibus down to Nargahole, a national park in southern Karnataka. There was twelve of us altogether, six Dutch, guys, one Belgium, one Romanian, three Germans and myself representing the mighty UK. Being the only Brit didn't work in my advantage as I obtained the duty of English teacher, and defendent of UK politics for most of the weekend, pretty difficult when the rest of Europe seems to know more about it than I do, but we had some pretty interesting discussions. My Hindu and Kanada language skills have not improved since i've been here, but I have aquired the 'International English' vernacular pretty well, so apologies if my writings sounds a bit odd at times. The bus journey was all we had organised, and kind of ... read more

Having checked the previous evening that Jess's flight had left Blighty on time, we made the early morning jaunt to the now familiar Bangalore airport and sat back with a coffee to await Miss Lewingtons arrival. It was great to see her familiar face again and after a few tears and hugs we were soon whizzing back along the streets to the hotel. A quick chai and we left Jess to snatch a few hours sleep while we headed off to the supermarket, my first in India, to stock up on supplies and antibiotics! Oh we could have spent hours exploring all the produce - a curry cooks heaven; a myriad of exotic fruits, spices, breads, popads and snacks. It looks quite a bit of persuasion to get Sue away from the bombay mix! Refreshed we ... read more

The homestay experience was excellent...despite being bitten by the bloody dog! Bit of stress after that...frantically looked through LP and my medical kit to see what it said about rabies. LP pretty much said I'd have to go home...and the medical kit told me I needed to get jabs straight away before the symptons came on as when they start to show it's too late Quickly got all the jabs, however I was assured by Anoop, the homestay owner that he had been bitten many times (and recently) and there was nothing to worry about! Not foaming at the mouth yet. Bloody dog was a spoilt little git. It was Anoops mums dog and it was very pampered....I saw her picking the fleas out of it's hair! Met a few girls from Henley and a lad ... read more

Hullo There! We had three camera in our last trek; this album is from one of them. The other two albums I'll send in the coming weekEndz. pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/prashantjanis/album?.dir=/6c20 Have a look at some of the later snaps - with calf of an elephant and all that exciting stuff. Kamlesh with baby-ele (see the photo) Essentially our tour was devided in three logical parts: 1. Hard-core trek - Thadiyendamol - Highest peak in Coorg! 2. Visit to an elephant training camp called Dubare Forest & Resort. 3. Visit to 'Nijyang' (I'm not sure about the name) Monastery. 1. Trek was good but the climate was very hot. You can say "who asked you to go for a trek in middle of March!" But then that's how I'm - "Spirits high, flesh (might be) weak". We started at ... read more
