Woolly says – We were up bright and early and having found probably the worse tea in the world, breakfast hadn’t been a great success, we’re in India home of tea growing, how can they make such a bad cuppa? Having left the barely consumed cups we headed outside where our driver, Winkie, was ready for us with his three wheeled chariot. As we bounced and bumped our way back to Hampi, we again enjoyed watching the scenic views and working animals going about their daily tasks. Flying past some of yesterdays temples we pulled up at the Zanana Enclosure, which housed a couple of things that couldn’t be missed on a visit to Hampi. Having walked past the base of where the Queens Palace would have once stood my eye was instantly drawn to the ... read more

We arrived in Hampi after a good night’s sleep, although the train bunks were narrow and being suspended from the roof of the carriage was a little daunting the gentle rocking motion soothed us like babies. Woolly says – Our first task was the usual business of haggling with the rickshaw drivers, now old hands at this it didn’t take long before we were flying down the road and our accommodation was found. The young driver asked if we wanted a guide for the next two days and the look of surprize on Zoe and my face must have said it all, we never have guides! Jo justified her instant response of yes to the driver by explaining that it was going to cost several paws and pistachios to get around the huge sight and at ... read more

Geo: 15.3333, 76.4667Clickety, clickety, click, woooo woooo, chai tea chai - these are the sounds of the train while my body gently jostles to the rhythm of its movement. I was stretched out on the upper berth, that I had unceremoniously mounted with many dark eyes watching while the man in the berth below me shielded his head from my swinging body and Jim tried to assist me and simultaneously protect others. It was the dance of a tired 58 year old on a moving train. Not particularly graceful. I awakened from a decent night's sleep, resting on my berth...I had applied all the accoutrements necessary for me to sleep the night: eye mask, kerchief laced with immunity-building essential oils, ear plugs and the 'piece de resistance - a good sleeping pill. I was swaddled in ... read more

To answer the question I asked at the end of my last blog entry, perhaps it was the right decision to leave. My bill at the Jungle Cafe back on Om Beach was a bit more than I was expecting and I ended up using up all my ₹2,000 - which had been my cash buffer that now no longer existed. I still had a few ₹100 rupee notes lying around but I'm not sure I would've had enough cash to stay another couple of nights in ATM-less Om Beach - so from an economic standpoint, I think it was a good decision to leave. Having been told there was a two hour delay to the bus, I was surprised when it suddenly popped up at the middle-of-nowhere hotel I was waiting at after just half ... read more

Comme si ... read more

How lucky we were that we got train tickets to go to Hampi before christmas. This was nearly impossible and I still have to thank this wonderful and patient travel agent in Agonda who booked us the tickets 2 weeks in advance. As it was a day train and only a 7,5 hours trip from Madgaon to Hampi, we did not care about a general class ticket. The journey was great and the landscape especially in the beginning around the Dandeli Wildlife Parc really beautiful. In Hubli a horde of army guys came onto the train. But they were very kind and respectful. The train was packed but the journey still pleasant. Arriving in Hospet we were immediately attacked by the rickshaw drivers who wanted to take us to Hampi. No thank you - the local ... read more

Geo: 15.3333, 76.4667Ah! Hampi! This is one awesome place to visit! In the middle of nowhere, surrounded by boulders and rocks, big and small. Two to three days is a good amout of time to see everything here. We arrived very early by overnight bus from Goa along with many other blurry eyed travellers. We spent the first day walking nearby and going up the hill for some superb scenic views. There is also a tuk tuk tour available which most drivers will try to get you to do from the moment you step out of the bus door. It's quite beneficial to do this tour as there is a lot to see and it's a quick way to get around. The price isn't too bad either for a full day tour. We saw many temples and even ... read more

Hampi; described as one of the most bewitching and spell-bounding landscapes with sandy temples and ruins dotted across some of the most spectacular scenery. Now a world heritage site, but in its prime it is believed Hampi was once one of the richest and largest kingdoms in the world. Take that you other built up ugly capital cities. In other words Hampi is generally described as a place not to be missed on a trip to southern India. Furthermore it was off the tourist trail of Rajasthan. Saying all of this, before we arrived we could not get ourselves excited for Hampi as we enjoyed our few days of relaxation in Goa and had seen enough palaces and temples to last a lifetime by now. Did we really want to see another one, two or even ... read more

One of the UNESCO world heritage sites, HAMPI is a small village in the northern part ofKarnatakaStateinIndia. We left for Hampi from Chitradurga afternoon on the last week of December. It took three hours to reach the place. Hampi is situated on the banks of theTungabhadraRiver. Like Mahabalipuram in Tamilnadu this place also represents the sculptural arts of earlier centuries of the southern parts of the country. The site remains as the ruins of Vijayanagara Empire. It was part of the capital of this empire in the 14th century. The major attractions here inter alia include the centuries oldVirupakshaTemple,AchutharayaTemple,HazaraRamaTemple,KrishnaTemple,VittalaTemple, the sacred Tank nearKrishnaTemple, Ganesha Mandapa,UndergroundSivaTemple,AnjaneyaTemple, Elephant Stables, Lotus Mahal, Monolithic Nandi Bull, Tall carved pillars, canals, Aqued... read more

Hampi, the ancient capital of the Vijayanagara empire is in ruins in North Karnataka. My cousin, her daughter and I decided it is a must see and jumped into the train headed north from Bangalore. I had booked air-conditioned railway seats but whole night I was wondering if I did indeed because it never worked. I observed my cousin wrapped up in blanket. It was all in anticipation of coming cool air :) We arrived at Hampi in early hours. A co passenger kindly offered us a lift to the main town centre. We booked into a budget hotel, freshened up and ventured to see the ruins. It was very hot. We drank water like fish but it was not enough. Apparently all government approved guides were taken. We looked around into the carvings, temples and ... read more
