Jammu and Kashmir or J&K as they call it. As long as I live may I never set foot in that place again, for so many reasons but the worst being we ran over a 5 year old boy with our car. We were leaving to head back home to Punjab, while driving through a small village in the Himalyas a little boy darted across the road. It was totally unavoidable. Laura was sitting in the front seat and I was in the back seat behind our driver. I heard Laura scream, I felt the brakes slam on and then 2 thuds. I could tell by the way Laura was screaming that it wasn't a dog we hit. Two men, the boys father and uncle grabbed our driver, pulled him out of the car and started ... read more

A few days on a house boat with a couple of visits into the mountains. This included staying a night with the gypsies. Whilst a worthwhile experience, I have never been so pleased to see a shower or traditional toilet. For 2 days I kept eating and drinking to a minimum, so as to avoid the drop down toilet as much as possible! Will I cope?! Whlist on the mountain trip I went on two seperate horse rides. As a non rider with poor balance this was daunting. Especially the first where the pony was led by a 5 year old girl, along narriow, often steep, footpaths with a long drop down (no, not the toilet type) the mountain on one side, and rocks on the other. I survived, and the 2nd experience was much better. ... read more

Hello Readers! (If we have any!) Wednesday saw us taking a tour of Delhi. We were up at 6am to get ready and went for a walk around Main Bazaar before being picked up by our tour guide at 7am. Bit of confusion as we waiting in the hostel and he wouldn't go near it due to stealing thier bussiness. First we went to India Gate, here we walked around by ourselve and took some good photos, this thing is hugh! There was lots of guards and a snake charmer! After seeing this we headed off towards Old Delhi to see the red Fort. When we arrived there was the usual 10 or so people trying to grab us and take us around, we ended up with some young chap (with a dodgy leg) taking us ... read more

We arrived a few days ago in Srinagar with relatively little fanfare (although the lines at the airport in Delhi were insane... I had to go through the Women's Only line at security, although there seemed to be a coed line, so I'm not sure why there was a difference!) The flight into Srinagar was gorgeous - probably one of the most scenic flights you can ever do in your life. We were able to see K2 (world's second highest mountain to Everest) from the plane, which was pretty cool. Srinagar is gorgeous - right in the middle of the Himalayas, with eagles constantly flying overhead. We're staying on a houseboat in the middle of a lake (there are about a thousand in a row!) which is really clean and nice. It is quite cold here ... read more

So, it’s about a week since we last added an update to the blog, the reason being that there is limited comms access to this part of Kashmir. The phones we have don’t work here and to access the internet we need to go to a little place down an alley way and up a metal ladder. Anyway we are back on line before we go to Leh. We have been very busy and there have been loads of highlights but lets start the story at the beginning. The British weren’t allowed to build houses in Kashmir - (Kashmir is right at the north of India next stop the Himalayas) so therefore they built lots of houseboats on Lake Dal. The attraction was that it is cooler here than in Delhi as well as being a ... read more

I've had to continue just to post a couple more pictures because there's just been a power cut in this very frustrating net "cafe" just off the lake. When you tell the guys about your problem they just say no problem! Thats's India - the only problem is no problem. Anyway here's the pics of Abdul the muscleman, Bashir's houseboat and old Bashir himself - what a character! Much more about him soon. p.s. We're off to Goa on Thursday where our netability will be greatly improved and I'm now gettin hassled by people wanting to use this machine so I'll continue the tale from there - Love to all x x ... read more

Well here it is at last - after six and a half weeks of manana mentality prevailing we've finally made it to travelblog! We've had untold obstacles to overcome in getting to print - one being the intense heat here in Kashmir since we arrived from Leeds via Paris and Delhi - another one being the copious amounts of Godfather and various other dodgy and very strong local brews that we've had to consume to stay cool. It's going to be tricky getting the last six weeks into readable format but I'll try. Our mission is to escape the UK (visa renewals excepted) for as long as possible with forever not being out of the question. The first leg was an overnight stay in Paris where the objective was simple - to get into and out ... read more

So we were brought against our will to an "official" tourist information office where we booked a trip to Srinigar in Kashmir against our better judgment! We basically paid for a flight, 3 nights full board in a 'deluxe' houseboat and all transfers- departing the following morning... Of course, we went home and consulted the Lonely Planet, which only served to reinforce our fears that we had booked a one-way ticket into a war zone and would be lucky to escape either unharmed or- at best- having not been ripped off or conned somewhere along the way. So with great suspicion we headed for the airport the following morning and boarded our plane (Jet Lite- one hour delayed!) to the unknown................................................. All of the above aside, Srinigar is an absolutely beautiful city and the Lonely Planet ... read more

Back from trekking since Friday evening. The trekking was not as long as I had expected, but it's certainly long enough for a first time. We drove (by jeep) to a small place 80km North of Srinagar (Gangabal). The 7 year old daughter of the travel agent/hotel manager here came along because she had skipped school. A pretty girl, I was "her friend" right away. I can hardly understand her when she or anyone else speaks her name, but it's something like Imani. Shefi and the cook (Mohammed Sultan, or Sultan) came along as well. Sultan was to stay with me, to cook for me and protect my belongings. We set up camp the day we arrived, near ruins of a Shiva temple, just by the river. A tent for me and a tent for Sultan. ... read more
