The excitement started off with me getting a call from the HP tourism office saying that my bus had been preponed by one hour. I finished my work as fast as I could and rushed to the booking office in Central Delhi. The bus left at 6:30 in the evening. After a rather uneventful 14 hours, I reached Manali. It has just rained and the weather was gloomy. I checked into my hotel and called up the paragliding company. I was disappointed when they told me that it was still raining at Solang valley and there was thick fog too; making paragliding not possible. Nonetheless, I decided to venture out. I had my breakfast and boarded a local bus that took me to Solang valley, 13 kilometres from Manali. With nothing much to do, I stood ... read more

Well I've arrived in India. Good flight from NZ and a nice quick transfer at the swish KL airport for the 5 hour on flight up to Delhi. On the flight I watched the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – a great film about some old English people who all meet up on a trip to India for various personal reasons. A great film and a perfect reintroduction to India. Recommend seeing it. So got to Delhi about midday on Friday. 33 degrees no wind and about 70% humidity i.e. really hot. It was reasonably straight forward going through passport control and customs. Once I got my pack I proceeded to investigate the brand spanking new highly efficient Delhi Metro underground railway into town only to discover that the line from the airport was closed for maintenance ... read more

Manali is such a sleepy little mountain village, but it's not always obvious. Recently it has become a popular destination for people all over India to take respice from the monsoons and heat in the rest of the country. We met a couple from Delhi who said that it is 45 degrees c there right now. I don't know the exact conversion, but it's well over 100 F, so it's no wonder they want to climb into the mountains and shelter themselves among the surrounding snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. The main roads and town centers are full, as is most of India, of taxis, motorcycles, rickshaws, and delivery trucks- all honking and driving around each other in a loud fury to gain even the slightest distance towards their destinations. It's not completely odd here to ... read more

Geo: 32.2862, 77.1614From McLeod Ganj it was an early bus to take me to Manali, it's a picturesque town, it has the stunning Himalayas as its backdrop and is a host to all sorts of activities. I've been recommended to stay in the old town which is extremely quaint with it's very old traditional style buildings which are amazing although they look like they could fall down at any minute. Many of them house the buffalo and cattle, goats and donkey's, again these homes are purpose built with the ground floor being the working area and I have to laugh the first day at this tiny woman chasing the cows in to be milked. Many of the homes have hand looms set up which the women work, and are making all sorts of scarves, pashmina's etc. ... read more

ha ha ha what an adventure that was! Manali also came and went and sorry for not updating you on my adventures there sooner but to be honest since we left Mcleod Ganj on the 3rd Sept, it has been just one big adventure since. Had a great time as you can probably imagine, meaning that updating travel blogs was the last thing on my mind. So I left Mcleod Ganj the night of the 3rd with some other friends who i had made whilst in Mcleod. We decided to go for the night bus option which was a 10hr bus ride, leaving around 8.30pm and arriving into Manali about 6am. This is where it all went tits up. Got on the bus and headed out of Dharamsala and along the dark road for about 2 ... read more

I didn’t miss the bus. An hour or so after my last post I met up with the others for lunch, we got sandwiches and fresh cookies in Roasted and Toasted and ended up staying there till about 7pm, joining our table with two or three others. I met a guy from London too, and we spent a few minutes doing what Londoners do, moaning about the price of drinks at home and the Great British weather. After this the four of us split up again, planning on meeting in a few hours for dinner. We met up for our last meal in Manali (I missed the opportunity to try one of Manali’s famous trout, which needs to be ordered a day in advance). Dinner was accompanied by beer, followed by a few more beers and ... read more
