Oh, Wow! What a day! First, our "interview" was successful and we were given the documentation that we will need this evening to leave India. Then, one of the women was enlisted to apply mendhi (henna) to my hands. I decided to go all out and so even my finger tips are covered. I couldn't touch anything for nearly two hours and then could allow the henna to fall off as it dried, but still could not put water to my hands until this morning. Then, we had our final party. Bill gave a magnificent speech! He named each woman in our project and said something specific about her particpation. Ilaben translated. I could see that each person was waiting with baited breath to hear what he would say, and he did justice to each and ... read more

Although we are still not cleared to leave (check Bill's blog for those hassles), we are entering the "countdown" in anticipation. Do you remember the music concert in memory of a man's father that I wrote about earlier? Well, Tuesday (tonight) was another concert, this time of popular film (mostly Bollywood). Interesting concept: really good singers signing popular music with the films from which the music is taken is shown behind the singers. The concert is in honor of two boys entering Brahmin adulthood...well, they get a white string that they are to wear (although many do not) but it appears to be similar to a confirmation, bar mitzvah, etc. Two boys in the same family: three separate events. The concert was held in an 800-seat auditorium, nearly full, assigned seating! I wore my art silk ... read more

We first met Shiva in 2000. On a scholarship to study organizing and social work at Boys Town in Omaha, as a SERVAS visitor, he visited our home in David City, NE several times, often when I was teaching real estate out-of-town. Here is his story: When he was 15, his mother gave him 50 hard-earned and saved rupees. He walked 12 days to an education in Kathmandu and his life's purpose. At one time, he was an advocate (lawyer), but he left that behind to have the freedom to work for peace and freedom, and to bring enrichment to Nepali villages. He has been honored by Amnesty Internation and the Friendship Force, and has been active in SERVAS. A few years ago, he presented a 3-day course at a Japanese college. A year later, 20 ... read more

The Log Cabin Quilt is the one that everyone is lining up to buy. The BEST one! My friend Annette told me several times, "get Eleanor Burns' book "Quilt in a Day" or something like that. I found a used copy and two days before we left, Bill figured out a log cabin quilt, assembly style, and that is what we left Meena stitching when we left for Kathmandu. After admiring all of the other quilts, we needed to arrange the 100 squares. I was content to do a simple one, but NOT MALINI. She was determined that we would make the most difficult one, and we did. See the photo. Isn't it amazing at the progress in just 10 days or so. We discussed that 300 or more squares could be made, quickly, production-style, and ... read more

We just didn't know what to expect Friday morning! The word that I kept using was "AMAZING" over and over again. I am attaching pictures of the finished quilts, most of which have been quilted. Madena is the MOST talented stitcher we have met; she took to quilting as a frog does to water! By late Saturday, we both realized that our job was over! We finished what we came to do. Saraben, the woman who has grown into Ilaben's job, has decided that she will continue to have the women make quilts for the next nine to ten months using up the scraps of cloth from garment making. The problem with these scraps is that the vegetable dye is not color fast. Most likely, the Indian market will not wash the quilts, but they need ... read more

I first came to India in 1965 and last visited in 1994. From the beginning, most of my friends were about 10 years older than I, so they got their Ph.Ds, married first, had babies first, married their children first, and welcomed grandchildren, most of whom are now old enough to babysit my grandchildren. Nothing much ever seem to change between my visits, even from 1975 to 1994. This visit is different, though. We are all older now, various creaks and pains. Our conversations are muted and focus on what our children are doing, our pride and joys. We don't discuss the glaucoma-induced blindness, surviving breast cancer, the creeping dementia that makes a mockery of any meaningful conversation...we do not talk about the things that we plan to do, because we have done what we planned ... read more

Read Bill's blog for a description of his trip on a motorcycle with Shiva to several villages. I stayed back for two reasons: I had a terrible cough and if I had gone, we would have had to take 3-4 buses and it would have taken forever! Most of the day I read the last Jo Nesbo mystery on my iPad and sat in the sun keeping company with two old women on the third floor terrace. One was Shiva's mother-in-law and the other was the mother of the downstairs tenant. That evening, both nursed two large jugs of a mountain-recipe millet "beer," and got more and more happy. Shiva's wife, Maya, understands more English than she speaks, but we were just fine without a translator. The women decided that I should drink HOT lemon sugar ... read more

Truly a remarkable event. Bill and Shiva had climbed many steps to visit one of the many monasteries in Kathmandu. I stayed behind with my cough and watched monkeys and dogs and people. From there, we walked to the Save the World office. I don't know what we expected, but this is what we got. First, an older gentleman showed up, introduced as the current vice-president. The president is a woman who was lecturing at the college and could not join us. Then, a younger man came, the treasurer. Then, yet another man showed up. They brought in ramen noodles for a snack. Then, the treasurer showed us the beads that he makes from paper (like the Uganda women make). He explained that he sold these necklaces to raise funds for Save the World. Of course, ... read more

Kalind, Ilaben's son, feeds a dog family, a mother, Mr. Dog, and originally four pupplies. One of the pups didn't move fast enough. When I went over to look, the others ferociously barked me away--all guarding the lifeless pup. Another one has disappeared. A newspaper article says that there are hundreds of dog bites monthly, more in Ahmedabad than elsewhere. The suggestion to euthanize dogs was bitterly opposed by the Jain community; the idea of sterilizing the dogs was opposed by animal lovers. Frankly, a female dog does not have pups by choice, only by biology. The Ah'd dogs and the dogs in Kathmandu are constantly scrounging for any food particles. They look at us with such sweet eyes, the way that dogs know how to look at a human to get a response. Sometimes, the ... read more

Up early Sunday morning for the 10th annual Motif Walkathon to benefit selected charities. Motif is a call center company located here in Ahmedabad; one of its bigger clients is eBay. AWAG is one of the beneficiaries of this year's walk/run. AWAG is delighted with the extra funds for this year's budget. Apparently, we were 7000 runners/walkers. Does it surprise you that the Ethiopian man and woman took first place running the 10K? No prizes for the 5K walkers, but I did manage to get on stage because I was one of the older participants. Now 12 hours later, I am pretty stiff, and I realize that IF I am to complete the Charleston, SC Cooper River Bridge Run the end of March, I had better get in some training. BTW, I had forgotten that the ... read more
