Today we took a trip to the Sahakari Spice Plantation near the centre of Goa. Bandanna John nearly killed us several times on the way or so it seemed! When we arrived at the plantation we got bunches of petals thrown over us and garlands put around our necks Hawaiian style. We started with a glass of lovely lemon grass tea and a bowl of cashew nuts. Then a guide took us on a tour of some different spice plants. His English took a bit of getting used too and he asked a lot of questions, both rhetorical and not! We weren't too good at answering the questions but managed to keep up with the rest of the group. We found out how to pollinate vanilla and how it takes 9 months to mature. Other ... read more

We got up exceedingly early today and were on the beach by 8am to go dolphin hunting (for photos, not meat!). We were still waiting for the boat a 8.20am when two German tourists tried to usurp us from our sun loungers (how rude!) The dolphin trip eventually got underway and we zoomed out to the dolphin area. The first sight of a dolphin fin in the distance caused the driver to give chase at high speed, then abruptly stop near where the dolphins were. It was like a game of cat and mouse, the dolphins waited until we got near and then zoomed off underwater, only to pop up somewhere else entirely. We did see a dolphins nose, fin and tail, but none of them jumped out of the sea in the traditional arc. ... read more

Well after the frog incident we then had a new problem - we had something with big legs behind the (not working) AC pipes. Trav got the manager as he seemed a bit left out not having got to deal with the frog! The manager got some bug spray and spayed loads in and then got a broom off the cleaner and started bashing at the pipes - eventually a massive cockroach fell out, its body was about 2 inches long! It took two wacks of the broom to finally kill it as well - what a monster! Kathy had difficulty sleeping because she was afraid of more frogs appearing... Today we've hire bikes and cycled into Benaulim - its really really hot for cycling. Along the way we met a local on a bike who ... read more

Trav found a frog under the toilet seat in our bathroom! It was a weird red and black colour, so initially we weren't sure what it was. Trav gave it a poke with a stick to make it jump into our bucket, which luckily worked and it was put back into the wild. The little girl in the room next door was very interested in the frog, apparently they also had one in their bathroom on their first night - think they must be coming in through the toilet system or drains. The manager says he'll get rid of it for us next time. I hope there isn't a next time........................... read more

Today we didn't do much again! Went for a swim in the morning and then it was time for lunch after which Trav built a sandcastle (see picture) which was cool although he got some sunburn while doing it :( That was about it for the day but I just wanted to show a picture of the sandcastle really! ... read more

Today was accommodation change day - we're now staying in Futardo's Beach Resort which is a lot more down market than the last place - but less than a third of the cost with no AC. John the taxi driver brought us over here at the slightly excessive (we thought) cost of Rs 150. At least he was there on time though, in Britain taxi's always seem to be late, I think John had been waiting for ages for us - he did say that business was poor this year though. The guesthouse has a series of rooms arranged round a courtyard which is nice to sit in although there are a few too many flies. There's also a restaurant looking over the beach and Trav had a Red Snapper for tea stuffed with a spicy ... read more

I thought I'd take a different tack with this blog since a blow-by-blow account of everything we do will probably get boring very quickly - both to read and to write! So instead I'm going to write about impressions I have. One of the first things I noticed was the different approach to completing tasks between India and the UK. In India labour is much more readily available and cheaper. For example, we saw a crew doing some road repairs and they were breaking up the old tarmac with a spike and two people with sledge hammers - in England the same task would be done by one man with a JCB. Restaurants are the other place where this is noticeable - the waiter to guest ratio is very high - if you went for an ... read more

Hi Guys, Benaulim was lovely. Not being content with laying on the beach like normal folk, Dan decided a 20km hike was in order. And so we trekked along the beach as far as we could until we reached an estuary (I think we got about half-way to Palolem). We left at 8am and finally returned to our shack at 5pm. Luckily there were plenty of restaurants along the way, so we kept fully stocked up with water and ice creams. It was really nice to get away from all the hussle and bussle and at times it felt like we were the only ones on the beach. While at Benaulim, we also took in a dolphin trip one morning. We saw loads of dolphins although at quite a distance, but they were still very cool ... read more

So Ben, Becks and I dragged ourselves away from Agonda up to Banaulim. Due to the necessity of as little time as possible in between toilet stops (Ben - Prawn Biryiani) we spent money on a taxi. We found clean en suite rooms rooms for 150 rupees (1.70GBP) at Jacinta Moraes Guesthouse. Having expected much, Benaulim is a little dissapointing, but we reckon this is because we spoilt ourselves in South Goa first, and it is nowhere near as bad as Colva. For Swifty's birthday we hired bikes and cycled down passed the paddy fields and tiny villages to Varca, and then sped along the beach back up to Benaulim, before the tide came in. We have proof on video. I got bitten on the foot by the biggest ant I have ever seen. It seems ... read more

Well I left Pushkar yesterday on the bus, few hours to Jaipur, got a hotel and jumped on a plane this morning to Goa. Much nicer 2hr journey rather than a 30 hour train journey! So have arrived and am staying in a kind of private house, really big room and balcony, which I actually found on the internet through couchsurfing.com! Just an amazing site. Am going out for supper with the person's house's friend who arranged it. Strolled along the bach today in about 30 degree weather which is very nice too. Even though this is a quite place there are loads of tourists here and really very sociable! So woke up this morning and walked to the beach and layed there allll day :) The water is so warm!... read more
