Just a quick update- got my ticket to Goa (yes!) so got up very early to Chatripathi Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai's main station. I had no idea where to go or what to do, so looked a little lost. A (seemingly) helpful man dressed as staff asked where I was trying to go and took my ticket- big mistake! He escorted me to my train and right to my seat, and just when I was about to tip him for his kindness he demanded 100 rupees! Felt like a bit of a melon for getting duped, but oh well! The train ride itself was a great experience. The train to Goa takes over 11 hours, so it's quite a journey. I sat with a nice Indian family, who talked to me and gave me bits of food. ... read more

Apologies for the conspicuous absence of blog over the last couple of weeks- but there's actually relatively little to report! The day after we arrived in Arambol I chose to ignore the guidebook advice about raw fruit and veg, and had a big fruit salad: which was lovely until about 45 minutes later... I don't need to go into details, but needless to say it was not pleasant and four days before I was up and about. Fortunately a lovely chap named Paul we met in Anjuna has been along with us for a couple of weeks now, so Jodie wasn't bored to tears waiting for me to be better. Sadly though, just as I had recovered, she was struck down for a couple of days. A right of passage though I suppose, and better next ... read more

Hi everyone, I will try to fill in some of what we have done from Delhi on. We had arrived in Delhi with Nick (who was on his way to Mumbai) and found a mid-range hotel nearby but not in the main bazaar to spare the boys the constant onslaught of chaos. We even spotted monkeys walking along powerlines and eating chappaties right in the city center!! The next two days were spent sightseeing at the Red Fort and the Delhi Zoo. The Red fort was great as the boys had so much space to run around. The Delhi Zoo had quite a few animals and in large enclosures. Jodhan wanted to see the monkey cage but when we got there, it was empty. Not that ist mattered for as the day progressed, the monkeys started ... read more

The fact that Goa was different from just about any other state in India was obvious from the moment you crossed the border. Gone were the ubiquitous shrines and temples devoted to a bewildering pantheon of Indian deities. In their place were whitewashed Christian churches that reared enigmatically above the palm trees. Crucifixes swung from the rear view mirrors of buses and taxis while their sunstrips proclaimed that "Jesus is our Saviour" or invoked the auspices of a favourite saint. The people were different too. Goans were a gentle race whose proud heritage was reflected in their names; D'souza, Fernandes, Rodrigues and Emmanuel - a legacy of more than 350 years of Portuguese rule. The Portuguese explorer, Vasco de Gama was one of the first Europeans to survey the Goan coastline in 1489 when the state's ... read more

Its been a while since I wrote again ....funny, it never seems that long but time flies! I'm now down in Goa, enjoying the sun and practising chilling out ....getting pretty good at it now! The days are flying by, I can't beleive its new years eve already. When I got to Goa, I stayed in Benaulim originally, which was lovely, but exceptionally quiet. Fab for a while because I felt completely done in when I got here. The month at the hospital was great, but it was pretty tiring compared to all that doing nothing! I was sorry to leave in one way - I miss the dogs and think about a few of the guys there a lot, but I was desperate to get to the beach and chill out. I had a good ... read more

Thirty-two days after our arrival in Hampi, we said our goodbyes and crept out of town in the early hours of a December morning. It was 5:30am and we had a train to catch that left Hospet at 6:30. Creeping out into the pre-dawn darkness, we made a secret rendezvous with a share-taxi driver from our friend Piru's village and prepared to leave town. We were trying to be surreptitious but our departure did not go unnoticed and there was one final encounter with the 'Rickshaw Mafia' before we finally got away. The bus to Hospet cost 10 Rupees but outside normal operating hours (the buses didn't start running until 6:30 in the morning), you were at the mercy of the Rickshaw Mafia who would often charge outrageously inflated prices. There was one other option and ... read more

After leaving the paradise that was the Andaman’s, we decided to ease our way back into India... And the best way to do that is go to some well known destinations, which are easy to reach and where little thinking or planning is required... First stop, Hampi, once the capital of India's largest and strongest Hindu empire, now a great place to relax in between some fantastic landscapes and evocative ruins... Hampi is blessed with some incredible monuments... You don't have to go far to visit them, as parts of them are in the middle of this little village... One can sit on a rooftop terrace and contemplate the grandeur of what once was... Or not, if you are not in the mood... I had a nice walk around the area, visiting boulders, ruins and what ... read more

(Catherine) We arrived in Goa 'white chicken', as the hawkers affectionately named us, and will be leaving tomorrow as slightly golden chicken. We've had a really lovely week sunbathing, eating and drinking. The food is amazing and so cheap - you can live like kings for less than 5 pounds a day! We've met some really interesting characters here, but my favourite has to be Shibar who we ran in to at a beach front restaurant one evening. He was selling postcards and asked us where we were from. When we said we used to live in Hammersmith he replied "Oh, yes, W6". He then proceeded to recite postcodes form loads of different areas. We tested him with a few tricky ones and he got them all right! We later found out it isn't just London ... read more

Arrived in Benaulim via a prepaid taxi from the airport. The taxi driver got a tad lost and sort of left us by the side of the road not far from Benaulim so we ended up searching around the place for somewhere to stay. Seeing as its currently monsoon season here not alot of places were open so we kinda jumped into the first place we saw and managed to haggle the owner of a very nice hotel (he paid me to say that) down from 1500 rupees to 500 for a double room with T.V and private bathroom. Was a bit weird staying there as we were the only guests at the 'resort' for the whole week. This was the best place to suffer from 'Travellers illness'-diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and generally I want my ... read more

Dear all, It has been sometime since l last wrote so l thought that l should! I am still in Goa and my day consists of getting up, going to the beach and then lunch and then having an afternoon sleep, then on to dinner! You would think that would be heaven however it loses it appeal when you know that everyday is the same. Goa it self is a beauiful place and everyone seems to have a smile for each other, it helps if your spending lots of money in their shop! No really, the people are great and very welcoming. The down side is that they are ruining the landscape by throwing their rubbish anywhere. I am off to Culcutta on Tuesday next week, there were two options the first was a twenty two ... read more
