The monsoon rains have been late in coming and not much has fallen so far. It is a lot cooler and quite windy at times, but the breeze is a welcome relief. Due to the lack of rain there is problems with feed for the white cows who unlike the water buffalo are unable to forage and graze because they cannot get up into the forest. Feed has to be bought which is an added expense for the local people and Karuna which they can do without. A few of the restaurants have been unable to open to because of the shortage. The area that I am staying in is called Kokulum, a small village between Enumulapalli and Puttaparthi, there is very little distance in between them . I turn left when I leave the flat walking for about twenty minutes, takes me to Enumulapalli where the center is situated, turning off the main road and up a small hill. It is very picturesque, especially near the river with the hills in the background. The village is traditional with lots of little brick built houses, some of them colourfully painted and quite elaborately decorated. A few of the houses have little sheds attached ... read more

Hi folks. settling in to a wee routine now and beginning to get to know all the dogs. The center has roughly 22 resident dogs who are not kennelled but wander freely about the area, they come and go as they please and normally at feeding times there are several more waiting at the gates to get fed. Most of the dogs that stay at the center have lost limbs or their back legs are paralysed. These are the ones that are bandaged regularly to help prevent infection of cuts and sores, it is amazing how cooperative the majority of the dogs are and not just the ones who are tended to daily. The out patient clinic is always busy, locals bringing their pets and livestock too for attention (at no cost). I saw my first ... read more

Hi All Finally left Hyderabad on the Thursday night in the midst of a tremendous downpour. The streets were even more alive than during the day and even the shop fronts which looked empty and boarded up during the day were brightly lit up and full of people. There were thousands of abandoned motorbikes and scooters with people sheltering in the doorways, under bridges and even in derelict buildings trying to escape the deluge. Huge parts of the road were completely flooded and the journey took a lot longer than normal. The train station was extremely busy but I found the platform easily and sat and waited patiently on the train. When it arrived I was amazed at the length of it, about 20 carriages long. There was plenty of time to board and find my ... read more
