This month I'm on Olympic duty but, a little unusual for an Olympic Games event, I'm not based in the host city of Beijing but some 1200 miles in Hong Kong where the Equestrian events are taking place. Not the most glamorous of sports admittedly - for some reason the general population of the world are not quite taken by the prospect of horses dancing - but its got to be handed to the organisers its all very well set up that you cant help but get swept up in the wave of Olympic fever. The competitors, volunteers and organisers are all friendly and approachable, its actually a bit refereshing to speak with athletes who are happy to speak to the press without giving off an overriding sense of distrust or contempt that I have come ... read more

EN FRANCAIS PLUS BAS PHOTOS HERE A Smokey Morning On Thursday, just as I was getting ready for a full day of exploration, the maid brings my attention to something my brain had actually registered but not processed (pre-coffee morning kinda stuff): FIRE! Indeed, thick black smoke is coming up one side of the building, and the fire brigades sirens are blaring downstairs. Going out is no option as the staircase is filled with smoke, so along with the other neighbours, we head for the rooftop and wait in the scorching sun until the fire is controlled, the smoke dispersed, and a bunch of firemen escort us out. Over the phone I reassure my hosts that their apartment is safe, and apart from a burnt smell that may linger a few days, there was no damage. ... read more

This has been a long day - and it’s not over yet. Luckily we managed to get a little shut-eye on the plane and had a beautiful pre-sunrise colour show before breakfast, then descended into and overcast and wet Hong Kong at around 6.30am. John unfortunately couldn’t meet us at the airport but gave us a few instructions on how to use the local public transport to get to our hotel. We were a bit nervous at first but with a little common sense and help from friendly locals it turned out to be really simple. We’ve now spent most of the day wandering around the different districts using the trains and ferries and found them to be incredibly efficient. They are all automated and bi-lingual and to get from our hotel down to Hong Kong ... read more

John showed up around 8.00 and after a couple of Coronas at the hotel took us to one of his local eateries in Tai Wai. The place consisted of an open corner of a building with wooden tables inside and outside on the pavement. The tables outside were covered by an awning but the torrential rain that was falling made everything a bit damp so we ate ‘inside’. It was good to be able to sample the local fare with the help of someone ‘on the inside’ so to speak, it also reduces the risk of any nasty surprises either during or after eating! The food was pretty good although they have a habit of cooking the whole thing bones and all which you have to sift through while eating. Just one of the cultural eating ... read more

I thought it would be nice to tell you a bit more about my work, seen as that is where I spent a lot of my time in HK, so here goes - an average (if there is one!) day at my Primary School in Sha Tin! I generally set my alarm for 06.45 and hit snooze! Then once I am out of the door I catch the 7.45 bus from across Nathan road to Sha Tin City One. Once I clock in, I head up to the 3rd floor where the staff room is, and prepare for the day! My classroom is on the 6th floor, so I go up there to organise my classroom and set up the chairs, and gather my resources. My first lesson is usually 09.05 and each lesson is 35 ... read more

50 metrin olympiamittainen uima-allas, aurinko helmeilee veden pinnasta, hiki helmeilee kasvoilla.. yli 30 astetta lämmintä. Kivoja uimakeleja Suomeen toivottelee, Teemu ;)... read more

Obviously it requires a day off!... Thursday was the School swimming gala ...and obviously this requires the day off the next day?! I like the system here...any kind of school event results in a day off! Brill. So the swimming gala involved me getting an extra early bus...something I was willing to do for a day off! I wore my new school t-shirt - supporting the red team. I sat with the red 'cheering team' in the stands. In typical Hong Kong style, it was very well organised....The opening ceremony saw the flag ambassadors marching (in the blue shoe covers you wear at swimming pools!) and raising the flag...then we all stood for the national anthem...then the school song, and then the opening prayer....Then the races could begin! A lot of the time I was clapping ... read more

Jossain vaiheessa lupailin tarkempaa kuvakollaasia yliopistoalueen elinympäristöstä. ;) Viikonloppua on tullut vietettyä rauhallisesti. Jospa sitä huomiselle keksis jotain erikoisempaa..... read more

Well...seen as the typhoon warning called off our junk boat trip yesterday, I ventured elsewhere! I went to the 10,000 Buddha monastery in Sha Tin. Actually I have read that there are more like 12,800 Buddhas there, but I guess the 10,000 Buddha monastery has more of a ring to it! At first we went up the wrong part of the hill to a memorial area where there were lots of memorial halls facing out into the hills, and people place food in there, so their loved ones are sustained. It's a nice idea...even cans of coke were there. Once we were back on the right path, we had to climb a lot of steps up the temple, and the whole way up there were lots of gold statues which were cool, and some of them ... read more

Pai... read more
