Hells yeah. Just woke up and I'm listening to rearranged and melodrama online. Yesterday was a fucking amazing day. Me and Johnny chilled until like 2pm after the crazy night before. We had lunch of udong noodles with his dad and talked about the kinds of netbooks out there, cause I figured I could use one for skyping and mobility since my large computer is such a bitch about those things. Around 4 we left to Sham Shui Po and found this enormous electronics store with all different vendors. In it me and Johnny could simply walk around and compare prices and models over and over. We narrowed it down to two models, one within the cheap range I was hoping to spend, the other slightly more. In the end I got the more expensive one. ... read more

Sunday morning, the 15th of November and this first of the Cathay Pacific sponsored Race Days at Sha Tin Racecourse. The first of 10 races would comence at 13:00 and I left home a little before 11:00, and arrived a little after 12:00. On race days the MTR open the "Racecourse" station, which leads via a footbrigde straight onto the concourse of the track. I was home ;o) As many of my firends know I like a bet, I'm not a gamble-a-holic, I don't have a problem I can stop any time I want, I just don't want to... plus, I'm not a quitter! ha... So, I made my way outside to check the track, and agreed with the course clark/steward that today the going was good, and standard on the All Weather - looking good ... read more

I have recently gone through a spate of bad airplane-seat-neighbors. You know who I mean: the chatty ones. The ones who recently got dumped by their fiances, are on their way to see their spoiled grandchild, won $20 at the lottery, or need to pass their fireman's EMT exam but probably won't because instead of studying they are flirting with you. The curse was broken, however, on my flight to Hong Kong. I sat next to a sullen-looking expat who waited until ten hours into the flight to open his mouth and ask me if I was visiting for the first time. I took the opportunity to ask him if there were any activities that he would recommend; things a little off the well-beaten tourist path. "You have to go to the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery ... read more

For the last leg of our journey through Hong Kong, Julie and I went to the 10,000 Buddhas Temple. It's neatly tucked away behind IKEA and some other buildings. If Julie hadn't known where it was we most likely never would have found it. Yet, somehow, some loud French tourists did. As we walked down the hidden path it was like we were entering the woods. Tall trees surrounded us, there were a few birds, but mostly it was quiet. The walk to the temple is all stairs. I don't know how many there are but I've been told over 200. There are golden Buddhas all the way up the stairs, at first just on one side, then on both sides, as though they're welcoming you to the temple. Some look serene, some silly, some screaming, ... read more

This weekend there was a plan. It was a grand plan, one of new heights, new lows, conquests, and tragedy. Sadly, only the last bit came true. The plan was that Samantha and I would take the metro to Hong Kong, then take their metro, then 2 buses, then hike for 2 hours over cliffs overlooking the ocean, and finally land on a beach and camp. We would frolick in the waves, rest in the sand, eat bad, over-priced , un-pineappled, un-chickened Pineapple Chicken Fried Rice, and collapse. We'd fall asleep to the gentle sound of the ocean surf. Yes, I was planning to camp in a tent. Yes, me. We checked the weather, which as usual predicted a slight chance of rain. And as usual I didn't believe it. So what if it was overcast--every ... read more

Tuesday (27.01.09) Lantau Island and the Tian Tan Bhudda I had decided that this would be my day to explore Lantau Island. There is a cable car ride up to Ngong Ping Village, nearby to which is the Po Lin Monastery and the Tian Tan Buddha which is, let me get this right, the world's largest seated outdoor bronze buddha. There are also some small villages dotted around the island that I had hoped to visit. The weather seemed fine when I set out, a little cold, but nothing too bad - on arriving at the cable car terminus there was a huge queue, but that was fine - I got in line. What I hadn't realised while I was in the queue (which was snaking back and forth) was that the mist had descended over ... read more

Hong Kong We stopped over for 1 night in Hong Kong - My Uncle lives there so we had the pleasure of staying with him and him being our tour guide (Bonus) Thank you Uncle Gary ! He picked us up from the airport in Hong Kong and then we went back to his apartment in Sha Tin (or thereabouts) and had a shower to freshen up - it was 33 in Hong Kong so very hot and humid. We then jumped on the Bus and headed into central Hong Kong. Spent a bit of time sight seeing and getting excited over seeing Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci hmmmm. It took me a while to realise we actually were on a double decker bus by this stage and it was quite funny as Hong Kong also have ... read more

Craig and I chose to get tickets for just one of the disciplines for the 3-day event - the cross country. It was a fabulous day out, and the first Olympic event of our trip. After finding out how to get there via public transport, the whole process worked excessively smoothly. The cross country course was around a golf course at the Beas River Country Club, north of Hong Kong. We were on the first train of the morning, caught one of the many double-decker shuttle buses to the country club, breezed through security and were delighted in receiving our free plastic ponchos! Neither Craig nor myself had paid any attention to the weather forecast which was for showers all morning. Well, it is fair to say that the plastic ponchos were as much of a ... read more

Well after the uninspiring dressage phase of the three-day eventing in Olympic equestrian things picked up on Monday for the cross country. Waking up for the third day in a row at 5am was not, and never is to be fair, fun but at least this time there was more excitement to report on rather than the placid affair of the weekend's dressage. Actually, the most amusing thing to come from the dressage was the plethora of Hong Kong locals who, like pretty much the rest of the world, had no idea what exactly it entailed and when the horses started moving from one side of the arena to the other many thought it was simply a warm up to a race. Afraid not, the subtleties of the aforementioned movement scored the riders points - movements ... read more

Busy weekend covering the horses in the dressage. The early morning (6am) starts were livened up with the addition of a couple of protests during Saturday's first day of equestrian action. First, a girl was thrown out for attempting to unveil a Tibetan flag but having her dress removed, accidentally, in the process. Secondly, rather unfairly, some protesters chose to voice their views when a decent young fella raised in Britain but representing China came out for his dressage. I can see where protesters are coming from but, as with anything, there is a time and a place and when a teenage lad is making his debut for his country, its unfair to spoil that for him no matter how gallant your initial motives may be. After starting at 6am on Saturday I didn't get finished ... read more
