After lunch two friends and I set off for Lamma Island. Lamma Island is southeast of Hong Kong Island and can be reached by taking the ferry from the #4 Pier at Central. We managed to find three seats together on the full boat. Unfortunately for me, it was right behind the pets aisle, so I was surrounded by yapping doggies. (Which I am allergic to.) Luckily the ride was only about 30 minutes.
We disembarked and the views that greeted us were amazing. We found a mounted map and made our plan. My friend who used to live here had suggested one route, but we decided it was too short or would add too much time onto our trip if we did it and the main trail. We decided to take the main trail instead, working our way southeast across the island.
The trail ended up being paved... and crowded. Part way in there was a beach. I was happy to get away from the packed trail! We enjoyed the scenic views and climbing on the rocks. By now the crowd had thinned out a bit and the trail was better. We were still in town, so lots
of people were stopping to eat and get drinks, etc. Our plan was to hike the trail and reward ourselves with amazing seafood at the end.
The hike ended up taking us a few hours because we went at a leisurely pace (no other choice on a crowded trail) and because we kept going off the trail and climbing on the rocks. Okay, _I_ kept going off the trail and climbing on the rocks. The farther you go off the path, the better the view and the better the photos! It was just nice to get away from all the people and have a few moments of tranquility and peace, something that is hard to come by in China or Hong Kong!
At the end of the trail was another town and ferry port. We walked along the pier and all the restaurants. We imagined they were most likely about the same, but still decided that choosing one with lots of people would be a good thing--lots of people usually indicates good food and good service.
We picked a multi-course meal deal that included a large plate of shrimp with dipping sauce, scallops served in their shells
with garlic and rice noodles and black bean sauce, and a whole fish served with what I just refer to as "brown sauce." Brown sauce is pretty common, even in Shenzhen, and is delicious. Our order also came with a plate of green vegetables (another standard in this part of the world.) We opted to order a plate of clams, too, because we were still just a little bit hungry. We washed it all down with a few bottles of San Miguel and Tsing Tao. Our view during dinner was amazing and we couldn't stop taking photos of it!
At last we boarded the ferry back to Central Pier. It had cooled down quite a bit but I still enjoyed sitting outside rather than in the cabin. The views of Hong Kong and Kowloon coming back into port were amazing. All in all, a splendid day!
