After being up until 4am last night, I slept until 7am when I heard my friend get up to go eat and catch the 820 bus back to Huadu. I went back to bed but couldn't sleep. I finally got up and headed into the city to meet a friend for lunch.
My friend is a grad student and was busy finishing up some work, and therefore running late. I don't mind, after all, the people watching in HK is fantastic. We finally met up and while looking for a seafood restaurant found a hole-in-the-wall Japanese place instead. We had a leisurely lunch, some of it delicious and some of it lackluster.
We tried to find the metro station and got lost. My friend asked a local man for help and he decided that rather than give us directions, he would take us to the metro since he was going there too! First we got on a bus and I got to see parts of the city I've never seen before; I really enjoyed the ride. Then he led us to the metro station before waving good-bye. I love this city!
I wandered around TST and actually found
the travel store I'd been searching for yesterday. I went in and looked--they didn't have the towel I wanted, either, so maybe it's good I didn't go there. The jury's still out on that one. I slowly walked around, taking it all in, all the lights, the people, the music. I stopped into a Pacific Coffee and bought a cup and read some more of my book. I'm really coming to enjoy this. It felt so cozy to snuggle up with a book and watch people hustle by outside the window.
I set off in search of a taco restaurant I'd been told about and got lost on the windy streets. I ended up at one of my staple feeding stops, Deli France. I ordered my usual tuna melt and soup. I was pleased to find that they had the newspaper, and read it cover to cover. I read the paper everyday, but there's something comforting about holding in your hands, slowly turning the pages, leaning in to examine a photo, all while the pages rustle between your fingers.
On my metro ride home, across from me there was a man dressed in what I can only describe
Xmas Decorations
Mickey scares me as "new age" fashion. He seemed more smiley than would be natural and I began to wonder why. After a while, he opened his messenger bag, took out a bottle of wine, took a long swig, and put it back. The stern woman on his right gave him a look while I tried not to laugh. Next to them was another woman carrying 20 rolls of toilet paper. When she saw me looking at her and her bounty (pun not intended), she laughed.
I decided to explore the local mall next to my apartment and see what it had to offer. Not a whole lot, in my opinion. Lots and lots of shops crammed into tiny spaces, the quality of the good reminding me of what I see in Huadu or what I saw last year in Dongmen, Shenzhen. Not all of HK is glitz and glamour, and it's so easy to forget that.
I went home, happy and tired, took a minute long shower, and settled in for the night.
