This morning is a bit of an orientation day as we get ourselves a bit organised. The first plan is to go for a walk and get an Octopus card each for our travels around Hong Kong.
We went for a walk down to the Star Ferry terminal and along the waterfront of Victoria Harbour where we found a Starbucks and had a cup of coffee. I thought we may be able to get the card at the ferry but couldn’t find an outlet but we went to an information centre instead. They have a walk of the starts along the waterfront celebrating Chinese movie stars but the only ones we recognised were Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.
We continued walking along the esplanade and crossed Salisbury Road and found a shopping centre called Win On Plaza. This is a smallish centre with a department store and a few other shops. Quite a good place and we made a couple of purchases here before heading in search of an MTR station to get our Octopus card.
A word of advice to anyone visiting Hong Kong. Get a map. We went to East Tsim Sha Tsui station which is
connected to Tsim Sha Tsui station by an underground passageway. The total area must spread over about a dozen city blocks and has something like 20 exits. If you take the wrong exit at this complex you could end up 500 metres from where you want to be. Anyhow, we purchased our Octopus card at the MTR station and then got the train to Mong Kok
Here we went to the Ladies Market to have a look around at the bargains on offer. We spent a good few hours wandering through the stalls and picked up a couple of bargains. This is very similar to Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur but on steroids and without all the hassle, unless you enter a stall area. Then they won’t let you go. It was a good way to get an idea of prices for other markets we intend to visit later in the stay.
We took our buys back to the hotel before heading out for the evening on Hong Kong Island itself. We started out by getting the Star Ferry across the harbour to Central where we planned on getting on the tram to where ever we ended up. As
it happened, the tram we got stopped at Tin Hau just past Causeway Bay. We got off the tram here and looked for someplace to have dinner. We found a restaurant called Bangkok Thai, which proved to be a very good choice.
I had soft shelled crab once again and Gina had a beef sate. Very yummy food indeed.
We then got the tram back to Central and then the ferry back to Kowloon to end another long day. We went “first class” on the ferry and paid an extra fifty cents to ride on the top deck. A very expensive HK$2.50 each, about 40 aussie cents.
