With Jackie (not Chan)and Jayjay All too casual, we did not book and followed a random Kiwi and Brit to their place in Kowloon. This is where we met Peter. Slimebag Pete as I like to call him. SlimebagPete managed a rubbish dump which he called Taiwan Deluxe Hotel.
Dealing with SlimeBag Pete was like dealing with a cannon. SlimeBag Pete demanded money upfront for 3nights. I ended up having a stand off for about 15minutes with him. I asked to see the room first, he retorted with YOU PAY NOW! Tired, we sufficed.
I can see why he did not want to show me the room. The shower had no nozzle and water ran down the outside of the hose. The toilet did not flush. Leon was molested by bed bugs in his hallway suite (Slimebag Pete said Leon could sleep in the hallway for 1/2 price).
SlimeBag Pete was full of bad chow mein (sh!t) and ended up kicking us out in the morning. I took my money back and gave the little fella another earful. Telling him he was lucky because I was young and had the energy to wear his old a$$ down.
So we took our stuff
and went upstairs to a proper hotel. Fully functioning and then headed out to the Avenue of Stars -where Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and all those punks from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon have their names embedded in the pavement. Unfortunately, we had brang the rain with us and it rained all day.
That night we met up with JayJay and Jackie (Chan) the Kendo master. Leon had met JayJay in Thailand and so it was nice of her to show us around. She took us to Mong Kok - where I discovered we were actually on mainland China. Not EVEN the island. How rude!
We checked out some cameras and then walked to the night markets which were teaming with great deals. Hungry, we found a little place to eat. Basically we had bones and rice and sauce. That seems to be the HK way. Cut up every bit of the animal and serve. All in all a great cultural experience. Leon showed the way, hooking in to the chicken feet (picture attached... GASP).
The following day I decided to find some more aggressive Chinese men... just like SlimeBag Pete. This time in the form of Camera
Gross!
Leon trying chicken feet salesmen. Let me tell you now, I do not like the way people in HK operate. I walked away from several deals because the sales people got aggressive with me. I just could not bring myself to buy a camera from a pack of psychos.
So, we went out for lunch instead. We chose a place with little birds in the window and I was in love. *Get me one of them and some fries* was my order. I found out that I was eating in fact a 14day old pigeon. Head and all. They pretty much just chopped the little fella up and put him on a plate for me. Outstanding. It was tasty but mostly just little bones and skin. I saved the little head for last but just couldnt bring myself to do it.
We took off to HK Island next to meet up with JayJay again. We cruised the mean streets of HK and experienced all there was to see. High buildings and shopping malls with the word Garden in the name. Capitalism at its rawest level. BUY BUY BUY.
Perhaps the highlight was entering the Gucci store and seeing a belt for US$250
Old Jimmy Lee
was a big attraction on the Avenue of stars. identical to the ones we got in Thailand for arround US$10. Boo ya.
JayJay took us up to the top of a mountain to see the view over HK. Of course, knowing our luck (Macchu Picchu all over again) we got up there to see some amazing clouds. So that was a fizzer. We all found it amusing as there was a lady selling pictures overlooking the view, but she changed the background to be a clear night. Hahaha! What a piss take.
JayJay was meeting up with a friend at one of HKs exclusive clubs. So we tagged along with the idea that we may see some of the real HK. That we did. We walked in and got all you can drink for around $50kiwi each. So that was a dream.
We spent the night watching all the somebodies and phonies of HK strut their stuff. Jayjays mate was an interesting dude with much advice for a young flyer such as myself. He property tycoon from England with Yellow fever.
I asked him when he though China would be the number 1 super power. His reply was it has already happened. An interesting point of view
from a man living admidst in the bustling world of China.
McDs and 30mins of walking and we were at the hotel around 6am.
Leon made the call that it was probably best to head straight to the airport.
However, I vetoed and lay down for a 1hour nap. Setting my alarm for 7am.
... or so I thought.
I woke to see 830. We were supposed to be up at 7 but I failed to arm the alarm. The plane was leaving at 950. Still drunk we ran to a cab and hightailed it to the airport. Plane was leaving in 45minutes, as we bounded for the check in. We were intercepted by a nice lady who told us our plane was full. She then continued to hand us HK$1,000, a Cathay Pacific upgrade and a huge apology.
Baffled we took the money and ran so to speak. We then passed out for 7hours in the airport.
Long story short, we got paid to be late for our plane. You legend Cathay Pacifc. I now know there is at least one kind hearted person in Hong Kong.
Me and my bird
14 day old pigeon.
