Today we were up early for our guided trip to the Great Wall of China. We had hired a private driver and guide. Our driver thought he was Mario Andretti by the way he drove! After our two and a half hour race car ride we arrived at the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall. We chose this part of the wall to walk as it is more remote and less touristy. It paid off as there were very few people there and we were able to get some lovely photos.
As we walked our way towards the beginning of the section we would hike, we were taken by its height and size. It as beautiful to see how the wall weaved through the steep mountain tops. It was hard to imagine the lives of the poor workers who built this wall in such rugged conditions. The section of the Wall that we saw was originally built in the 1500s, has been partially rebuilt, and is in very good condition,
We really enjoyed our time on the Wall and it will be something we will never forget. The Great Wall covers over 5000 miles and we only viewed a very
small portion of it.
On our way back into Beijing we stopped in a small town for a local meal. Our guide and driver enjoyed a special dish of pig guts. Doesn't that sound yummy! We did not risk tasting it. Corn is big here and we passed huge fields of corn on our drive. We have seen the locals eating corn at all times of the day.
In the evening we visited a couple of local shops to find food for our breakfast on the train tomorrow.
