Day 4 – May 7th – TCM Pharmacy – Beijing Zoo train to Zhengzhou
First visit was to a TCM Pharmacy (Traditional Chinese Medicine) – “Tongrentang”. This is China’s largest health centre. Chinese Medicine is very popular and we were given a lecture by a professor on herbal medicine which is now getting recognised as a scientifically proven was of maintaining your health. We all were given a free consultation and prescription. Mine would have cost $900 for 3 months supply!
We then visited the zoo to see the giant pandas. Felt a bit sorry for them as they were in quite small enclosures. Quite a small zoo compared to Melbourne.
After the zoo, we headed for the train station to get the ‘very fast train’ to take us 700 kms south to Zhengzhou in 2 hours.
Arrived at the Grand Glory Hotel which is run by the Central Government. Very pleasantly surprised as our room did not smell of smoke, was relatively clean and large. Lots of others on the trip complained as they did not have any air-conditioning. After checking in we went to explore the local mall. Could not recognise most of the food
on offer but settled for a bowl of dumplings which were scrumptious, 2 fish balls each and 2 pancakes (hand cakes) which were cooked on both sides with a scrambled egg spread over it, some sauce, some lettuce and then rolled up. They were light, fluffy and crisp – beautiful. Total cost of meal was $6. Fell into bed, exhausted but happy.
