We left Ningbo early in the morning, around 8 if I remember correctly. The drive took a couple of hours. At first it was interesting as I got to see parts of my new city that I hadn't seen before, but after a while I became bored. This was due to the bus driver not really having a clue where he was going, which meant we took a few wrong turns and had to double back on ourselves. This was hard on some of the small and windy country roads that we encountered. One highlight though was passing a bus of people all done up for a wedding. They were all dressed in lots of red and looked beautiful. Me and my friend were looking at them and wondering and they were doing the same to ... read more

Dongqian Lake is one of the main tourist spots in Ningbo, so we hopped in a taxi and headed there. Since the lake is massive and we didn't know which part we wanted to be at a quick phone call to someone gave us a location to show the taxi driver. The journey took about twenty minutes. The taxi dropped us at the start of a smaller road and we walked down it. There we found a ticket booth and paid the entrance fee to Tao Gong Island. I can't remember how much it was now. The God of Wealth, Fan Li, and Venus, Xi Shi, lived on Tao Gong Island several thousand years ago, or so the story goes. We consulted the map and it seemed that there were a few things to do on ... read more

A quick trip to the Ningbo Museum. We tried to walk there as it didn't look too far away on the map, that was a mistake. We got horribly lost wandering around parts of Ningbo that are being developed. I thought Korea would never get finished the amount of construction work going on there, not a patch on China. Also, where are all the people? This part of Ningbo feels like a ghost town at times. After finding a Korean restaurant and having some bibimbap there, we flagged down a cab and drove to the museum. Much easier! NIngbo museum opened in 2008 and was designed by Wang Shu, a famous Chinese architect. The museum looks very impressive from the outside, really different to the other buildings in the area. The idea behind the design is ... read more

My first exploration into my new city. Tiangong Farmstead was about a half hour's drive from where I live. I think it would have been quicker if the bus driver hadn't got lost and took us to another farmstead first. The first place we visited was a square surrounded by workshops. The buildings are all in the traditional Chinese style, they looked so pretty. We wandered through the various workshops, looking at what the artisans had produced. There were lots of gorgeous carvings and lanterns among other things. This place must run art classes as in front of the workshop/shops were lots of kid sitting on little stools sketching and painting. It was an adorable sight to see. After wandering the shops, we decided to head out and see more of the farmstead. While there had ... read more

The return to Jinhua was a bit of a downer moment for me. It seemed liked such a small city once I compared it to Wuhan. I now understood the comment that Jinhua felt too small to Terry. It seemed so much smaller and uncultured when compared to what I had vaguely seen in Wuhan. I knew how Terry felt “trapped” in the small city that Jinhua offered to him. It felt so small to me even if I was used to living in this city. It was but a stopping point along a much longer journey I needed to make but still an important stop for me to understand what actually faced me if I travelled around China. I had felt like my entire hometown could fit snugly in nothing but a block or two ... read more

Before setting off for the heady heights of Shanghai our next stop is the beautiful town of Hangzhou, reportedly enjoyed as a holiday retreat by Emperors long gone. But first to tell of our new year on the train. The negotiation of the station was easy, having our own waiting area for the train, and on the platform the attendants were all smartly lined up alongside each carriage. We had magnificent peace and quiet, being the only passengers in the carriage let alone our compartment, after the noise and hustle of Xian it was a treat. Dozing in the compartment, which was the plushest of the trains so far, we saw many red lanterns and occasionally fireworks and that was it. Party poopers or not I enjoyed the peace! And so to Hangzhou. The scenery had ... read more

Eventually the time had come and I was about to be in a city that I had, for a very long time, been dreaming for. Suzhou. I had been studyng the history of China for a long time and Suzhou was famous for its arched stone bridges, emerald green canals and its beautiful willow trees with hanging branches caressing the water of the canals. Of course, the modern days Suzhou has changed a lot and, at my arrival, the narrow streets running a long the sumptuous canals were lined with colourful and crowded cafeterias, bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and local ladies brushing and cleaning the staircases leading to the boats docking area. It was drizzling but still ok for a visit around the city. Even in Suzhou things change fastly and I could see many constuction ... read more

... read more

“Tianning Temple of Jinhua” With a late start, because we needed to grab breakfast at around noonish, Terry and myself set off in the light rain to our new destination. We used a taxi since it was safer than navigating the rain slicked roads of Jinhua on an E-bike. The ride felt long to reach Tianning Temple of Jinhua (金华天宁寺) but we soon discovered we were not as far off the beaten path as we thought we were. This temple was definitely inactive. As a typical tourist attraction, it held none of the flashiness other places use to draw in the crowd. It was in disrepair and time had not been kind to this small place. I must admit that at first we ended next door to the temple in the yard of a hotel. The ... read more

“Jinhua Aiqing Cultural Park” The next adventure with Terry started on a misstep as we discovered, after a long taxi ride, that the place he planned to show me was closed. Undaunted, we looked at Terry's prepared list for a good alternative site to visit. Within moments taxi was flying back over the route we had came on, our new destination was the Jinhua Aiqing Cultural Park. I must admit we could not visit the entire massive riverside park. Only a section was photographed and explored before crossing one of the many bridges to lead us into a secondary sister park (Jinhua Architecture Park) that sat on the opposing bank of the Yiwu River. I must believe that my presence had reignited Terry's passion for exploring since he kept saying how he had barely visited most ... read more
