Autumn is a key season in Chinese culture; it is nation-wide the best arguably season of the year in China. Recently I took the opportunity to finally visit Ningbo where I’ve heard is an ancient coastal city that is thriving in modern China.

The best natural sites in Ningbo are Dongqian Lake as well as the Hangzhou Bay Wetland Park. Alongside the lakeside you can find the ruins of many ancient buildings and enjoy star gazing in the evening. The wetlands are perfect for bird watching and enjoying a picnic in the marshes.

Seasonal Meals of Autumn in Ningbo include specialty dumplings, steamed stuffed lotus leaf, and of course, both fresh-water and salt-water seafood are famous in every season of Ningbo.

The autumn customs are everywhere in Ningbo, especially in the many Buddhist temples throughout the city. There is even a special Buddhist lesson on the ‘Autumn Mood.’ I visited the Ashoka Temple, Tiantong Temple, and the Baoguo Temple all of which deeply impressed me. The mountain fog surrounding the temple makes for a magical sunset. I would definitely suggest Ningbo as a brilliant destination in the autumn.
