You find yourself on train station in Kunming. You take public bus nr. 73 to the East bus station or Dong Zhan (better yet, take 73 G, because it's direct, and a bit faster). This is where you get buses to the, more or less, south, so, also to Mile. For some reasons, the area is not written about so much. The name itself is a Chinese version of the name Maitreya Buddha – but, according to some stories, the name actually belongs to another person, a local tribal chief who lived there long time ago. The names are written with the same Chinese characters and pronounced the same, but now the chief is forgotten, and people think about Buddha when they say Mile. »This is the place where clouds fell in ... read more

After spending 2 night and 1 day in Dali, our next stop was Lijiand. We got there by taking a 3 hour train. It cost 39 yuan. We stayed in Shuhe old town, not far from Lijiang old town. That part got badly burned last year and we saw many abandoned buildings. Still, it was a very chilled out place.... read more

This time i really travelled around Yunnan Province. Me and other teachers from my school set sail for Tiger Leaping Gorge by way of going to Dali and then Lijiang. After that we even had time to stop at Shangrila for a night cap before going back to Kunming. Photos below belong to our first stop - Dali... read more

Our primary destination for this trip was Tiger Leaping Gorge. It's located 74 km North of Lijiang and 50 km South of Shangrila. We spend 2 night and 3 days hiking it. I believe overall we hiked about 25 km. We stayed at 2 hostels with Tina's hostel being our final destination. After leaving our bags at Tina's, we embarked on going to see the actual river which took us about an hour, going down on the steep curve, to get to. Overall, this was amazing experience and I'm really glad to be finally able to do it.... read more

Today is the official Mid Autumn Celebration, a lunar holiday when the moon is closest to Earth and can be seen with all its frontal glory. Moon cakes are popular gifts and all teachers received them in spades. On Friday, 2 days before, we went to Expo Garden and had a picnic inside it. It was unusual and interesting experience. Dumplings, chicken wings, potatoes and of course all types of Yunnanese spices, some of them quite oily. It's a pretty and big place and the bonus is: one can actually go for free after 3 P.M!... read more

I've been living in the dorm for a month now. I quite enjoy the new surroundings and still go out every week to discover new places. I visited Black Dragon pool by taking publis bus from the Carnival area, 2 blocks south from my school. And finally have tackled the mountains seen from my dorm window, the Chang Chong Shan ( Shan is Chinese for Mountain.) The weather has been absolutely fantastic this month, not too cold and not too hot, perfect autumn for hiking and venturing out,... read more

I've arrived in Kunming on August 27th. I was taken to my place to live which is a dorm in the Secondary 10 Kunming School, the place i work. It's a pretty big school with pond in the middle and big stadium with awesome mountain view. The pics posted are the pics i took during my first 2 weeks of excursion out and about. I've visited downtown as well, but i've been in Kunming before in January this year, so no new pics were added. I"m pretty impressed with the Northern part of Kunming, which provides an ample space for getting away from the city noise.... read more

Asia » China » Yunnan » Tiger Leaping Gorge July 11th 2015

One of the reasons we visited Lijiang was to do the 'gruelling' 2 day trek to Tiger Leaping Gorge. The legend tells the story of a tiger that leapt from a rock across the raging gorge to the other side. One thing we now know for certain though - There are definately no tigers on the trek. Getting up extra early so we could grab our regular order of baba & bao zi for breakfast we then followed one of the guys from our hostel to the awaiting minibus. The minibus takes you from Lijiang to a small town called Qiatou about an hour away where we were to begin our trek. During the hour bus journey, we got chatting to a couple of others on the mini bus. There were 10 of us in total, ... read more

How was our 60+ hour journey you ask. From Beijing to Kunming (one side of the country to the other) took 44hrs with a 5hr stopover before hopping onto another train for a further 9 hours to reach Lijiang. After all we had been through on the great wall, this journey was surprisingly relaxing. Arriving in Lijiang train station at 6am still blurry eyed we made our way to the bus stop. The sun slowly rising, many people already stood at the bus stop waiting for a bus that seemed like it was never going to come at all. Eventually after nearly an hour, our bus pulled up. We had to brace ourselves and get in position. Everybody wanted to board the bus complete with backpacks, pull alongs and large sacks of food. Everybody squeezed, nudged ... read more
