Geo: 25.7, 100.15We were only planning to stay a couple of days in the small town of Dali and ended up staying for four days. Dali is a very old town where the first settlements are dated from 3000 years ago. Located at 1900m high, near the lake Erhai, the town is surrounded by mountains up to 4000m high. It is just an awesome place and you can judge by yourself when looking at the photos we took.I (Elfi) had the contact of a friend of a friend (Matthieu), his partner (Dorine) and their newly born daughter. We met the family in a park near the city centre. It's where we tried tea with "crisanteum" flower for the first time. They introduce us to the region and their circle of friends. It is how we got ... read more

Geo: 25.05, 102.7We arrived in the evening, around 9pm, in the city of 'eternal spring' for a stay of only 24h. We were late for dinner so everything was closed but we had the chance to find a street-stand where they had BBQ skewers and BBQ vegetables. One of the best BBQ we had! The guys at the table next to us were quite drunk and were loudly playing a drinking game. It was some sort of shi-fu-mi but different. It was fun to watch them. The city of Kunming has nothing special, just a big Chinese city. We walked around, went to the Yunnan museum (it's free so it's ok but there is not much in it and nothing is translated into English). We found ourselves in the biggest park of the town late afternoon. Parks ... read more

Kunming is home to approximately 3.5 million people representing all 26 minority ethic groups in the province. About 75 miles from Kunming is the "Stone Forest", covering 96,000 acres, containing both large and small forests as well as lakes and waterfalls. About 270 million years ago the region was covered by the sea. Over time the waters receded, uncovering a massive bed of limestone pinnacles which due to time and the elements, have been whittled into tree-like forms, rising in densely packed groupings that do resemble a forest. In the evening we enjoyed a folklore show featuring Sani women in their native costumes. These dancers were part of the opening show at the Beijing Olympics.... read more

I had started coughing on the bus from Tacheng to Lijiang the day after seeing the snub-nosed monkeys. I thought I was just getting a cold or perhaps it was all the cigarette smoke in the bus. In Lijiang the coughing got worse and then I got chills, and they were multiplying. Maybe it was Yunnan Monkey Pox, or Bird Flu, or China Syndrome whatever that is. I haven't been bitten by anything for ages, having been at higher altitudes for more than the last month, so it wasn't anything insect-borne; it must have been a virus. The chills turned into the hot and cold shivery-shakes. I turned the electric blanket on the bed up to full, put on all my clothes and made myself a sauna with the covers. All night I did not sleep, ... read more

I had some weighty thoughts about drunken singing stints in an old city night club but let me just say we had fun last night and the band, for some reason, kept buying me beer. Always a mistake. Jinyi got some kids from Shenzhen up dancing with us so it wasn't so embarrassing until the bandleader kept asking me to sing the final song. I thought he meant we were to get up and dance one last time but he wanted me to sing and Jinyi was running around snapping photos so …. Sorry about that China: Hey Jude never sounded so bad! I'm adding as many photos as I can. Hope you can understand how to get here.... read more

I am sitting in the corridor outside our room in Lijiang, China’s World Heritage Site, designated for its ancient, eight-hundred year-old city two blocks from this very unancient, very spartan but comfortable ten-dollar a night hotel. The noise of China washes over me. At first I tried just listing what I was hearing. Because it kept changing, even as I moved my notes around in a circle, recording what I heard, I couldn't make it make sense. Now I am trying again, but this time I will pay attention to types and sources of sound in this country that has created the most wild and busy construction zones on the planet, where even in the most remote villages I see through a train window huge bridges are being built, brick houses with rebar reinforced corners and ... read more

Geo: 25.05, 102.7So as I started to write this from 32,000 feet up, somewhere above Bangkok I got to thinking about how many kilometers I've travelled so far. My trusty app informs me that I've blogged about 2793km, add on 1527km between Hangzhou and Chengdu and the 2435km between Kunming and Kuala Lumpur and my trusty calculator informs me that the total is 6755km or 4197 miles. Considering Hangzhou to London is 5723miles, it's not a bad distance! When I arrived in Kunming at 5am and after an unusually warm and bumpy train ride, I piled off the train with (no exaggeration) about 1000 other people and went to find the bus stop. Eventually I ended up at the hostel and had a nice nap. Kunming is a city famous for its wonderful climate - it's ... read more

Geo: 25.6955, 100.159Hello from a beautifully sunny and fairly warm Dali! I've definitely adapted to the slow pace of life in this province and no day is complete without a few stops at various cafés - going back to the city is going to be a shock! Haha This part of the trip all began with a fairly uncomfortable train journey. For reasons only known to those in control, a 2 hour journey warrants beds, not seats. However, lying down on said beds is seemingly forbidden so 8 of us hunched onto the bottom bunks (there are 3 levels of bunks) and there we sat invading each other's personal spaces and unable to move an elbow for the two hours. Arrival at this non-descript station was celebrated by a hundred people or so all yelling and ... read more

One of the special animals of China is the snub-nosed monkey. There are actually five species. The golden snub-nosed monkey is the most widespread but also annoyingly difficult to see, especially now that China has forbidden access by foreigners to all the habituated troups (this was the species I went to Zhouzhi to try and see and was refused admittance). Then there's the Yunnan or black snub-nosed monkey which is restricted to a small area of northwest Yunnan, and the Guizhou or grey snub-nosed monkey which is found on just one mountain in Guizhou. These second two species were both formerly treated as subspecies of the golden monkey, which is quite ridiculous if you see how completely different they all are! Down in North Vietnam is the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey, and over in Burma is the ... read more

Geo: 26.875, 100.238Tiger Leaping Gorge is regarded as one of the most beautiful and best hiking areas in China. Consequently I decided it was definitely worth checking out, especially as people had assured me that it was actually hiking and not just climbing up steps! So myself, the Korean girl and a French-Japanese girl got in a car and set out on the 2.5 hour drive to the starting point. The driver didn't want to pay the toll fees so we went off-roading for most of the way before picking up some ransoms and then detouring to drop them off somewhere else. Eventually (3.5 hours later!) we begun the hike. We were followed by two men on donkeys/horses who assured us that although the beginning was easy, the later parts were difficult and we might succumb ... read more
