Nansan(@950m) was my last destination before enter into Dehong region for my festival trip. Coming back after almost 5 years...I couldn't really recognised the city. The new bus station in the new town...only when I climbed up to the view tower on the hilltop then I find my orientation back, the once muddy land now flooded with buildings. Same like Gengma, touring the surrounding area in Nansan area you can only rely on minibus, and ironically it wasn't that reliable as the business was slow, don't count on any schedule departure as it move only when it fill up. Not much you could do here unless you are Chinese citizen then you could go over the border into Burma...casino and women!!! "pay 100 kuai and I can take you over the border" many driver handed me this offer. "NO!" I was wondering how much I would had to pay when I need to coming back as it is illegal! Market around Nansan area was an disappointment, I was expected to see the Miao in Mengpeng market as I had seen some 5 years ago when I pass there by bus, but there wasn't any this time and the market was rather

quiet as well. The only compensate was an abandoned old stone bridge well preserved somewhere behind the village, perhaps that was why it could survive for being neglected, said it was build at year 1908. The tribal scene in Fengwei and Mengdui market also as bore as Mengpeng, although you could see Dai and Han even they all had their costume! Only the Nansan market rescue my spirit. beside the Han and Dai, The colourful Miao(Bai Miao) with long triangular headdress which imitating the arrow head, front and back apron, some women still kept their white plaited skirt. This time I could see more Deang women in costume, and some even came with headdress, they wear their salong skirt as high up to armpit and decorated with many rattan rings on waist, top with a tight jacket and some still wear legging. Sometimes there would be Deang came from Burma as well, and the dressed a little different from their Chinese neighbor. When enquired about market in the area, Laocai market over the border in Burma was included, seem like it is part of China or...perhaps it is??? I just saw a documentaing film on TV week ago about life of people in this part of Burma(the area next to Dehong Prefecture), many school had been sponsor by Chinese, all the posters and banners are in Chinese, even when interview the students and surprised they were spoken Chinese too. I had never been to Murma and had no idea about anything there. wasn't it Globalisation? right?
on the 24th September, a short news show up on internet said there was a Richter 3.4 earthqueak went off in Luxi. but that was all you could find in the news, nothing had been mention. seem like it was just an minor incident, and I guess the local authority wasn't really happy about that as...there wouldn't be any money came in from the central government...for relief and for reconstruction. Nowaday in China, materialise standard in a backward county can be move forward for more than 20 years if there was any natural disaster, especailly in the area far remote from the economic center, never will money come to help improve the living standard especially money need to be filtered through the administration of the local government, so...I can be sure there was nothing seriously happened in Luxi with the earthqueak.
