Today was our last day of sightseeing in China (tomorrow is our last day, but it will only be packing and airport transit). Today was one my personal highlights of this trip (along with the Great Wall, Riding the Xi’an city walls, Terracotta army) as we visit the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The mountain has several peaks (from memory, somewhere in the 30’s) the highest just under 5,600m. The mountain has been climbed (successfully) once in 1987, the Chinese government allowed a Japanese expedition a few years ago, but many of them died on the mountain. Since then, it is forbidden to climb the mountain, also it is sacred to the local people. We went to a meadow which is around 3,200 meters above sea level (the highest I have been!). In the meadow there is ... read more

We bought an extra rucksack a few days ago it makes shorter excursions easier by allowing us to leave our big bags at the hostel while we do side trips. It worked well for Tiger Leaping Gorge and was still packed ready for Sha Xi so we left Panba late morning and walked through the old town towards the water wheels looking for the new bus station. Luckily we were approached by a college student who needed to talk to and get information from a foreigner as part of his English course. When we explained we were looking for the bus station he agreed to walk with us and ended up first pointing out which bus went to the bus station, then coming with us to get more information and a picture and then helping us ... read more

The third day of our tour, while based in Lijiang, comprised an ascent of Yulong Xueshan, and a visit to Su He Ancient City, not far from Lijiang. While the ascent by cable-car to 4,506 m is simple and quick, the logistics of accessing a berth in the car are a nightmare, given the massive numbers of tourists (mostly in tour groups like us). Having arrived at the base, we were first taken away to see some artificial lakes and rapids in a nearby river, coloured naturally blue by carbonates and sulphates in the water. We then waited an hour back at the main base, before being taken by bus to the cable-car station where waited for another 40 minutes in a queue. The ride was of course provided pleasure and challenge for both of us, ... read more

Said to be the glacier that is closest to the Equator. The highest peak that can be reached by cable is 4680 meter. On a good day, you should be able to spot it as far back as Lijiang Ancient town. We got there around noon, by the time we purchased the tickets, we were told that we wont’ be able to get on the cable until 3:00pm. It was a Saturday, bummer. So we wondered around trying to kill time. Our driver pointed us to a shuttle to BaiShuiHe, a free scenic spot in the park. I emphasize on “free”, since the 200 yuan you pay at the entrance will get you into the park, where there is really not much to see. You have to pay extra to go to almost any other major ... read more
