... read more

Shangri-la Tour, it’s a dream . Sky is blue, eminent snow mountains, draa valley, holy lakes, Grassy Plain with cows and sheep, modest people with pure mind, it’s the quintessence of harmonization between human and nature with foreverness, Serenity and peace ,this is Shangri-la my dreamy place! The British author James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon described this place, we also call it as hambhala, normally we consider Shangri-la is in Zhongdian County of China Now let’s discuss about my journal and travel tips: The 1st day: Our care arrived in Zhongdian, stay in Zhongdian County The 2nd day: it’s a nice day today, we went to Yila Prairie, it’s also called as “Napahai”(Na Pa Sea),Plenty of rain covers the plain as the lake when the rainy season comes, it soon becomes to sea. Shangri-la Shangri-la actually means “Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture”.I have been there many times when I was very young, because my dad is a geologist and that region ia very rich in mineral resource. Shangri-la has changed a lot, because of tourism, and the book “The Lost Horizon”. This summer I went to Shangri-la again,to my surprise this region has been well developed during the past years. When I was there many years ago, only a street named Changzhengdadao Rd. was can be seen. But now there are at least 20 branches were built and the bus station was rebuilt. Fortunately it’s not going to be a modern city, because everything was rebuilt as they used be. After my dad finished his job in Deqing county,we paid a visit to the Songzanlin Lamasery of Shangri-la.I gotta tell people something about t ... read more

(Day 117 on the road)I am in Shangri-La, and I am freezing my butt off. My body was expecting temperatures in the range of 30 to 40 degrees, instead the thermometer is showing a chilly 9 degrees. Shangri-La, the former Zhongdian, renamed by clever city officials to attract more tourists a few years ago (it works, I am here, along with thousands of others) lies at an elevation of 3300m. I can feel the height of this place when I walk up a small hill and wonder why the heck I am so out of breath. Then I remember that 3300m is quite high already, Shangri-La being at the edge of the Tibetan mountains, which lie to the north-west of here. Apart from glimpsing the Tibetan lifestyle (the "real thing" is almost impossible to get to ... read more

We got up at 7:45am. We couldn't find showers last night or this morning so had to skip. Had breakfast at the resturant/kitchen whatever it was (with the friends we met last night). Breakfast was Naxi butter tea/milk with these fresh bun things. I think it was Tibetian style. 10 RMB (less than$2AUD) for 2. Said goodbye to Samicha - the cute pup and waited outside for a bus. So the bus didnt come but at about 9 this car driving up to Shangri-la stopped and picked us up. It was 25 RMB to Shangri-la/Zhodigan. When we got there we bumped into the American and Dutch girl we had seen staying at halfway house at tiger leaping gorge (who i found out later was Lindsay and Eva). They were on a scooter (which they had hired ... read more

Die Neustadt Shangri-Las (und Neustadt i... read more

Day two in Shangri-la and having slept soundly not to mention warmly it was time to head out exploring. My first stop was Napa Lake (Napa Hai) a decent hours ride out of the city. It was without doubt well worth it, in fact I would go as far as to say it was my best experience of the trip so far. Having the bike was great as it really gives you the freedom to fully explore the area. I basically just kept riding, heading for the mountains. The scenery was absolutely stunning. I like to think I'm the kind of person who calls something the way they see it. It takes a lot to impress me but this quite literally took my breath away. The lake actually dries up in the summer months and fortunately ... read more

I'm once again a few days behind as I've been in the Tiger Leaping Gorge for the past three days and they don't have a lot of internet access there! So here goes with a little catch up. Monday the 17th..... As I'm not going to Tibet (probably a wise choice at the moment) I find myself in Shangri-la, or also known as Zhongdian The five hours to here by bus from Lijiang was made all the easier by the spectacular landscape I passed through on the way. I think I might have made a mistake in a previous blog by mentioning that Shangri-la's Tibetan name is Zhongdian if I did I was wrong and the Tibetan name is in fact Gyeltang or Gyalthang. Apologies to any Tibetan readers! It seems I'm coming here right at ... read more
