Some observations about color in China If you were a child in China, you might grow up thinking that all trucks are blue. Seriously, almost every single truck that I have seen here has been blue. Sure, I’ve seen a handful of green ones, but they’re few and far between. Trucks here also move pretty slowly here, and they have these smaller, ‘tractor’-like trucks here the move _really slowly. I think these things have like 2-cylinder engines, you can hear the pistons just firing. Ok, can you guess what color that flowers are here? That’s right, red and gold, like on the flag. Of course, this could be for the national-day holiday, but we’ve seen displays all over, and yup, they’re all red and gold blossoms and blooms. If you’re a pink, purple, or blue flower, ... read more

After three solid days of travel we have finally made it to the trail head of the Tiger Leaping Gorge. We rolled off the bus this morning wide-eyed and weary. As we unloaded our packs from the top of the min-bus, Gorged Tiger Cafe owner, Margo met us and immediately offered us a clean room and a shower. Hallelujah!! This area of China looks and feels different than the other cities we've been in. Being so close to Tibet, things are a little more laid back and quiet. It is a lot cooler, as well. It feels strange to finally wear the long pants and jacket I have had stashed away in my bag for so long. Soon I'll be shopping for thermal underwear and a hat! Oh, the things Gerry and I have endured since ... read more

We're still here. China that is. For better or worse we're still exploring this mystifying country. As an exhibit, a few days ago Sherry and I were sitting in a cafe that served western food. On the menu: beef burger, cheeseburger, vegetarian burger, potato burger. I ordered the cheeseburger. It was a grilled cheese on a bun. Tasty, but honestly, I was expecting the burger part too, the meat! We're in Lijiang which is in very NW Yunan province, which puts us in very SW China. Here we're not that far from Burma, from Tibet, from Laos. This is another very touristy, and touristed, town. Especially this week, the holiday week. There are tons of Chinese tourists here. They have an old town here, kinda like Alexandria, only older and less yuppies. Today Sherry and I ... read more

Lijiang is famous for tourists in China, especially for lovers. But I recommend that if you want to have a tour there, you should get up early to feel the morning of Lijiang. In the daytime, there are so many shops and people. Actually, Lijiang is special in China. The system of drainage and the style of architecture are totally different from other cities and villages. In lijiang, you can buy souvenirs and climb the Yulong Mountain. At the top of the mountain, a beautiful view opens to you. ... read more

We left Dali on a tiny minbus and headed north to Lijiang - a trip which took 3 hours. Lijiang is situated in a beautiful valley and is surrounded by mountains, including the 5500 metre high Jade Dragon Snow Mountain - the peak of which we didn’t get to see! The bus dropped us in modern Lijiang, which was the usual conglomeration of cement, dirt, bustle and sprawl. Not at all attractive. We caught a taxi the 3 kilometres to the old town and were dropped off at the entrance. The streets within the old city are too narrow for any traffic so it very peaceful - or at least the streets away from the centre were! The city was crisscrossed with canals and tiny bridges and was a maze of tiny cobbled streets. Lijiang was ... read more

So we were travelling by bus once again and despite of the newest bus station in Zhongdian the bus was still built for the old Chinese size, which means that for most of them and particularly for Peter there was no room for the legs. Luckily the bus wasn’t full and he could therefore sit diagonally which was just a bit more comfortable. From Zhongdian we were constantly driving downhill and were slowly starting to feel hot. Peter grumbled that he had too many warm clothes with him (Stephan had urged him to not knowing how cold it would become in Tibet), what now made his suitcase far too heavy. With the lesser altitude, the landscape changed once again, it became greener still and more densely forested, the first palm trees and banana plants turned up. ... read more

Geo: 25.925, 103.174Yunnan province is simply beautiful. We flew there from Tianjin with special half price student tickets in the New year holidays. The capital, Kunming is bright and refreshing. We'd almost forgotten what fresh air and greenness was like after so long in Tianjin! The Chinese call it the city of flowers. It certainly possesses a cleanliness and sparkle that no other Chinese city I've visited has. The weather is gorgeous. Blue skies all day and in this part of China you can actually see them through the smog! After Kunming we caught the bus up to Dali. Bus rides through this area are quite something. The scenery is spectacular, you don't want to close your eyes. It seems I had my video camera running for nearly the entire 10hr journey!! Dali is a bit ... read more
