Driving out of Lhasa to the East of Tibet in an area called NyingChi. Stopped off at the birthplace of Song Ten Gampo. Then on to a waterfall which was excellent. It was raining but the terrain was very like Yosemite with massive coloured rock faces with a huge waterfall cascading down. Beautiful, even in the rain. But little time there, as we had a 12 hour drive ahead of us! Finally arrived in NyingChi and had traditional hotpot style dinner. Lovely fish dish. The drive was so arduous because the Chinese are building a highway right across Tibet and it was all under construction. So sometimes there was no road at all! Dirt track bouncing us around, other times, the police used speed checks of 50 miles per hour. Our driver was very enthusiastic to ... read more

Day 12. We went to the high mountain range over 4000m high again! Great veiwing platform with forested valley, mountain range, cloud and yet another range above, one peak rising to over 7000m! Then we came down a little to see the biggest Cyprus trees in Tibet, a sacred site. There were 3 main trees to look at. Then we took a suicidal busride, slipping and sliding around going up a steep dirt track washed aay in parts by the landslides caused by the rain the day before! Hold on to your seats!!! White water rapids all the way along, and then a short walk along to the sacred lake. Back to the town of NyingChi for sweet Yak tea. Scott then had a blind massage from a young man. Jerry thought the woman was going ... read more

Day 13. This morning we drove to the lake Basomtso, which has an island in the middle of it. On the island is a monastery. This was our last stop before driving all the way back to Lhasa. We eventually arrived back in Lhasa in the pouring rain but all the souvenir shops in the old quarter were still open so we could do some last minute Tibetan shopping. We bought some Tanka in a shop and then went next door to Lhasa's Kitchen to eat our last Tibetan meal.... read more

Hi all, We're back to blogging since returning to Chengdu from Lhasa today! No internet access at all in Tibet! So a lot of catching up to do! Day 6 and 7 were basically in a train, 42 hours along the Tangu - La pass at 5,072m on the Qinghai - Tibet rail line! The railway is built on a permafrost and the Chinese continually ensure it stays that way! The train's about 15 carriages long, with compartments with 6 bunks to each, with a narrow corridor alongside to seat and eat and watch the Tibet countryside roll by. Day 6 became day 7 and still we climbed. Scott woke up with his head spinning and feeling nauseous. Altitude sickness seriously kicking in! Threw up all he ate so stayed in bed trying not to move ... read more

Day 9. Scott too ill with altitude sickness to venture out. Everyone else went to the Potala Palace in the centre of Lhasa. There were about 100 people dancing to Tibetan music outside the Palace. Potala Palace is situated at the centre of Lhasa and a vey impressive building. Steps zigzag'd up to the top, with good view over the city. The Palace was full of buddhas and Lamas. The group tried Yak milk tea in a tea house nearby. Scott Oxygenated himself and joined everyone for the afternoon. Walked around the old part of town around the Palace that was full of eating houses and souvenir shops. Had dinner in the Potala Palace grounds and saw the palace lit up at night.... read more

Geo: 29.65, 91.1 No one slept well last night. All of us, including our guide, were feeling the effects of living at such a high altitude. I thought that my slight headache and racing heartbeat were because I had not followed Johnny's advice and had overdone activities yesterday, but everyone was feeling the same thing. So I had no regrets, and felt better about stepping out and exploring Lhasa on my own our first day in Tibet. But today we were going to see the Potala Palace! Such an exquisite palace to explore, plus with our extraordinary Tibetan guide, Yarpel, this turned into another afternoon to add to treasured memories. To reach the Palace, we had to go through security, similar to what is now considered normal at airports. And then there were 432 steps to ... read more

Day 7 spent vomiting (The Chengdu chunder) and head spinning for Scott. Jerry completely unaffected. Git! Miles and miles of flat plateau surrounded by mountains and an enormous lake. Day 8 we had entered Tibet. The guard told us to get up early to see the sunrise and an impressive mountain pass (Tangu La) we travel through. She was right. Up at 5.30 for sunrise and a weird mixture of desert, dunes and snowcapped mountains. Plenty of Yak, a few foxes, plenty of sheep on the way. Homesteads dotted about with earthen walls around small houses and farming plots, plus the occasional wigwam effect made from coloured material blowing in the wind. Checked by Tibetan police in the train and at Lhasa station (3,600m), but finally let us in. Lu and I mightily relieved to be ... read more

Geo: 29.65, 91.1 I am in Tibet! We flew in from Chengdu early this morning, watching stunning views of the Himalayan mountains and distant high, snow-covered pointed peaks as we approached Lhasa. Tibet! On the bus ride from the airport to the city our guide told us he spoke from his heart; I immediately liked him, his gentle nature, his insights into the Tibetan dilemma. But he couldn't say everything I'm sure he wanted to since every tour bus with ten or more people is accompanied by a Chinese policeman. For safety, is the explanation, as many cars and buses go too fast. I think it's for a very different reason. Lhasa is the "City of the Sun." Its elevation is above 12,000 feet, so frequently people get high altitude sickness; we were cautioned to take ... read more

Lhasa Tour day 1 & 2 Could not sleep well at all with breathing problem, a hint of a headache and the noise from adjascent road. I had already been advised not to take a shower. Next morning a new guide picked me and walked to our base hotel (New Mandala Hotel). This definitely was a better hotel. The room was on the quite side and you got a breakfast in the morning. I was to await the tour mate who was sharing my room. As it turned out Mark Ayoub was a Californian 4th generation Syrian belonging to the Syrian Orthodox Church. At 20 years old he was 6' 8" tall basketball player and was easy to get on with. He had been to Bali etc. and is going to Kerala after Bhutan, Delhi, Mumbai ... read more
