Scars from the 2008 Earthquake
Old highway destroyed in the 2008 Chengdu earthquake.
May 7, 2017 (Shuimo, Wenchuan County, Sichuan) Sunday morning after breakfast, the SPPH hospital van took us to a recently opened feature near Shuimo, a town located in the area affected by the massive and devastating 2008 Earthquake. It is a historic area that has largely been reconstructed, and a recent project is a valley walk along a stream down a steep Renji Ximu mountain valley. It is a demanding hike, even going down hill, although the paths are well maintained. At the peak of the valley and in selected slopes along the way are massive fields of flowers that color the landscape. The site opened this April and none of our hosts had seen it before.
Renji Ximu Valley Scenic Area (Chinese translation: vision of an earthly paradise) is located in an area surrounding Shouxi River. The scenic area is integrates a mountain stream and hillsides of flowers, blending the natural landscape with flowers found in the area’s natural vegetation. It is 1.5 km from the town of Shuimo, about 75 km from Chengdu. The area has extensive fields of California poppy’s, pea flowers, snapdragon, corn poppy, mini roses, pulsatilla chinensis, foxglove, thistle, sagebrush, iris, pteris and canna flowers
that dramatically color the slopes. A steep path follow the creek down the valley back to the town with breathtaking picturesque views. It is an impressive breathtaking (pun intended) 2 km hike down the steep slopes.
