Panzihua, Sichuan, China (May 20, 2019) Another bright sunny day in Panzhihua. We mobilized early to make the 3 hour drive to Yongren, run a blindness prevention clinic, eat lunch and then travel another 3-4 hours on the bus to Kunming. Both Yongren and Kunming are in Yunnan Province. The geography of the area is that of mountain regions, deep gorges and interspersed valleys where there is a lot of agriculture. The landscape is also dotted with alternative energy sources - large hillsides covered with solar panels and wind farms on some of the ridges. We also crossed some deep, deep gorges over impressive bridges and tunnel systems - not trivial engineering feats. The bus is very modern and high tech, with multiple cameras and sensors - and the result was a lot of beeps and alarms that seemed to trigger frequently to alert the driver of the white lines or speed. That and the intermittent air horn blast to warn an unsuspecting truck driver we were coming kept us out of REM sleep! We arrived to Yangon Hospital to another welcoming throng of expectant patients....
