They grow a lot of bamboo to support the giant pandas.
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
is a large, beautiful and impressive facility in the outskirts of Chengdu, close to where we had done the vision screening program earlier in the day. It is a popular place on weekends, and always a highlight for newcomers to the team. Located north of Chengdu on the Futou Mountain, it has rivers, lakes, brooks, ornamental green lawns and greens, wild bamboo forests and, woods, man-made dens, rocks, caves and plant pits that simulate the panda’s natural environment. The landscape creates a natural and mentally healthy environment for the pandas and it has been a successful breeding program for the threatened species. We spent a beautiful afternoon (low 70's with low humidity and even some blue sky) enjoying the giant pandas, red pandas, black swans and peacocks.
...and buying silly panda hats!
