Chengdu, China (April 21, 2016) After a quick coffee at the new specialty coffee shop in SPPH, we went and toured a large new private orthopedic hospital being built by an investor that has expressed interest in investing in an eye hospital as well. We had lunch with Dr. Wu (chair of the department) to discuss strategies for our meetings with the hospital administration and how to move the International Eye Hospital project forward faster than it has been going. The full team here is Dr. Farris (neuro-ophthalmologist at DMEI), Drs. Yun Liu (cornea specialist) and Paul Chen (cataract surgeon) from Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, Dr. Jewel Sandy (DMEI Global Eye Care Fellow), and two senior residents - Dr. Jeremy Tan and Dr. Jonathan Perkins. Great team dynamics, lots of laughs, great comraderie with the Chinese residents and faculty. The rest of the day today was spent teaching the residents, going over case histories and then select patients were also examined and discussed: thyroid eye disease, visual pathway tumors, odd inflammatory retinopathy.
