May 29, 2015 (Chengdu, Sichuan, China) What a difference a good night's rest (sleep might be exaggerating) makes. The rooms at the Pairui Hotel were ready for us and after a short meal, we checked in for the night. The three requisites were there: comfortable bed, good internet access and great hot shower. We all woke up early and headed down for the communal hotel breakfast buffet - always a bit of an adjustment once we get here. But we now know how to ask for salt for the boiled eggs we get! Muggy, warm and drizzling outside this morning. I have a conference call (Skype) after breakfast and the others went to find Starbucks coffee. This afternoon we begin in clinics with the academic exchange portion of the program. The weekend will be spent visiting the Panda Reserve, and then going out to do a community outreach clinic with the blindness prevention program in Pixian.

Breakfasts in China are always a surprise...
after many Chinese breakfasts we decided to stay at a Mercure hotel. We had bacon and eggs, and waffles, but they didn't know what maple syrup (or even fake syrup) was. After bringing us jam and various other items, we finally got the syrup. By the way, I knew a Dr. Christie who did work similar to yours in Gansu Province for 20 years. He has retired.
