Datong, at the Coalface of China Datong, located 300 km west of Beijing in Shanxi province, has a reputation for being one of the most polluted cities in China. Coal is its thing, and there’s no hiding it. Yet, perhaps undeservedly, it is also the guardian of two of northern China’s finest historic treasures. Datong The five-hour bus to Datong gives a basic impression of what is to come. Beside the highway lies the main railway towards Beijing, along which great locomotives heave an endless succession of trains, each a hundred carriages long. They are all carrying coal bound for the capital’s power stations. For Shanxi, feeding Beijing with coal really is akin to selling gummy bears to the fat kid at school. But you wouldn’t say Datong has reaped endless rewards from the relationship. While ... read more

To start with, thanks everyone who's been encouraging me to write this blog. Theres a good chance I would have given up and stuck with my journal if not for your kind words. ^_^ This entry sums up my time in the Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces. And yes they are two different provinces right next to each other, just in case Chinese isn't confusing enough. Once back in Beijing, we decided to make Xi'an our next stop, but since its getting close to New Years the trains were all full. So the new plan ended up being a better one anyway. We booked a 7hour sleeper train to Datong and for the following evening a 16hour sleeper to Xi'an. This not only gave us 12hours in Datong to see the nearby sights but also ended up ... read more

Daniel helps me to book the Beijing local tour. Since he knows the manger so I do not need to go in to sign up, just bring the money at the meeting place. It is a 4 days tour, equal to 7 days from the States. The tours in the states always are misleading. A 7 days tour meet at the airport in the evening to take off count as 1 day, crossing the international daylight time another. The last days is getting up in the morning to go to the airport. Total of 3 days unproductive lost time. This one is 4 net days, start 6:30am and return on 11:00pm. The whole tour cost 880 rmb plus single supplement equal to 1,100 rmb in this highest season of the golden week. Admissions and some food ... read more

Hot water is on only after the morning call in the hotel. After a simple breakfast they call it the morning meal 早飯, we took off at 7:00am on time. It took 90 min of mountain road to get to the monastery on Mount Heng of Datong. The cost to get in is 60 rmb; student discount for me is half the price. It is only less than two hours per day the monastery is in full sunlight. The monastery is not that big, no more than 100 persons single file can fit in there. 30 % of the structure is cantilevered out of the cliff and constructed of specially treated wood. The pole is only for decoration to make you feel safe while up there. There are no structural values of the poles. It has ... read more

*Quick note: I'm really far behind on my writing (because I'm having a better time) so if I skip between present and past tense, it's because this all happened a few weeks ago* I got the train from Beijing to Datong, a tiny little place, that only has three hotels, and the only reason people go there is to visit the Yungang Grottos which are a taxi ride away. These caves (although they're not really caves at all, more walls with holes) were carved with huge Buddha's inside them in about 450 AD, and took 50 years. It took a combined effort of about 40,000 people to do them. I think Buddhist monks carved them. Monks are cool, even the really devoted ones like these guys. They're still standing, and the tallest one is over 17 ... read more

Gabe again. (apparently steph gets burned out writing in her own blog and leaves me to fill in the details of the trip) Yesterday there was a bit of a mixup with the train tickets. The girl at the happy dragon in beijing helped us get the tickets, and she even gave us a brochure and circled the chinese phrase telling the driver to take us to the west train station. The only problem was our train ticket was for a different train station 10 km away - we didn't find that out until we got to the west train station. There wasn't enough time to get a cab up to the correct station but luckily they were able to transfer our ticket, free of charge, to a train that left an hour later. Could have ... read more

Let me just throw this out there. Blogging is very difficult for a person like me. Most nights I say to myself…okay, I am going to sit down and blog about my last 3 cities, lock myself up in a room, put on some mood lighting and delve into a journey of memory…. but then a cute girl comes down to sit next to me and I practice my knowledge of Mandarin. I am now the proud user of vocab such as ‘shwi ga’ which I say with enthusiasm while pointing to myself(means handsome guy). For all who are curious, this is now my chat up line. It works 70% of the time…everytime. Girls dig my alpha-maleness, something which I have been trying to work on in America and fail miserably. Or somebody asks me to ... read more

The bus leaving Wutai Shan early in the morning to the Hanging Monastery was - like usual - packed with people. The trip took about three hours on a sometimes bumpy road. I was glad to have a normal seat in the bus. After arriving at the Hanging Monastery, I approached one of the couples from the bus. They could speak basic English and I asked them whether they knew how to get from there to Datong later. They told me that they had gotten a phone number of a taxi driver who was taking them later to Datong and the caves which are situated there too. That was exactly what I wanted, so they arranged that I could join them in the taxi! Because I had my backpack with me and there was no official ... read more

We left Beijing for Datong quite early in the morning about 5:30 AM and arrived at the Yungang grottoes at 9:30 AM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yungang_Grottoes. We rent a car with driver across the street from the hotel. It was quite a surprise how we made it since I don't speak a single word of Chinese and the driver does not know English. With a map, a pencil, paper and body language we agreed to go to 2 sites in Shanxi province namely the Yungang grottoes and Hanging temples http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanging_Temple. The highway connected Beijing to Datong is very good. In certain section, the driver sped to 150 km/h with his 5 seats Suzuki sedan car. There is not a lot of cars in these highways but lots of trucks. We were heading North pass Badaling Great Walls and went ... read more
